ok this is just a random idea tell me what you think.

so a lot of wiring in my cj5 is really messed up including most of the wiring on the steering column (turn signals and horn and ignition etc) so would it work if I took a 12v marine switch board and wired these things to the switches. So if I wanted to turn left I would flip one switch to turn on the blinker etc. I figure I would need (left signals, horn, right signals, headlights, fog lights, bright lights, ignition) and if I used marine switches they would be water proof. Would doing it this way pass inspection and be cheaper than a new steering column and switches?

IMHO opinion I think it would be more of a pita than it would be worth. You wouldn't have everything you need within hands reach to be convenient. Now for fog lights and other accessories it would be a good idea. Would you want to reach for your dash (I'm assuming that's where you'd put the panel) every time you went to make a turn. Then reach again to turn them off? I'd just search for another column or try to fix the one I had. Maybe you could make one work out of a later model truck or Jeep?

X2^ Sounds like a major PITA....

Would prob. cost more than repklacing the column. Marine switches are not cheap, the good ones atleast.(about $10-15 ea)

Are the turn signals supposed to be self-cancelling, ie shutoff when the wheel turns straight? I know its a technicality, but just in case anyone cares. I don't think the marine switches are such a bad idea, maybe if I saw the prices though...

Marine Electrical on a jeep is always a huge plus, any electical work i do on any of my rigs get marine parts, shrink tubing, tinned wire, shrink with soider connections, etc.... Your idea is great, but the saftey features, like the signals are better left in the stock position, Ignition momentary on the dash, lights, horn, etc on the dash are ok, and honestly i think would be cool.

I don't think price is a huge deal because you can get used panels with a lot of the wiring still on them for pretty cheap. the only thing you would need to do is paint over the labels.
