Chris at Marsfab helped me out with some additions to my cage, so I thought I would share how it turned out.
After laying my jeep half way over onto a tree at The Flats (lucky to only destroy my factory sound bar) I wanted to add some B to C pillar supports and speaker pods. Since I can't weld (yet) I depend on the pros to help me out in that area. Chris (owner of MarsFab) did unbelieveable TIG welding work that has certainly earned my business in the future!
Pics of the process:
Getting ready for stripping-
Chris testing for length-
More grinding on the notch-
Tacked into place, starting to take shape!
Welded up! Man, the TIG welds came out clean!
Bars welded in, ready for paint!
Brought the jeep back to the house for some sanding, priming, and painting. Then wire the new speakers and lights from the pods and we should be all set!
I decided to go ahead and re-finish the whole back half of the cage so the paint would match (only to be scratched up at the next outing, I'm sure).
Duuuuude painting in the cold sucks (~50 degree garage). The paint is impossible to work with, plus, this spray can is like a flame thrower and I think I got paint EVERYWHERE.
I spent about an hour sanding and cleaning, another hour painting, and then a third hour with a Magic Eraser cleaning up overspray. But, the white is now on! And at $24 per can, it was a deal. However, it did come out to a perfect body match.
Next up was the speakers and finishing touch ups.
I picked up some Rubicon speaker boxes for a wicked deal, so now I just have to change the wiring around from a pre-2003 TJ setup over to one that fits up to these speakers.
Wiring:
Wired up and ready for testing:
Cutting off the old harness:
All wires connected and tested.. Sounds good!
Drilling into the cage for the support bolt:
Pushed in the rubber grommet for vibration dampening:
Drilled in and ready to rock!
Cage painted, speaker pods mounted, and touch ups completed!
Big thanks again to Marsfab for the welding! Looks better than factory.
