maybe some change

alright so slowly im constantly replacing more and more parts on my ZJ. so i have been thinking of couple different options ,

getting personal loan to completely "re-do" my jeep over even though i have almost replaced everything there IS to replace.

purchasing another ZJ in better condition maybe newer year and possibly a v8

thought about a WJ but i just dont see it as a "tough" vehicle, more of a semi-luxury suv. I have looked at some newer suburban Z71 they seem to be nice.

then i considered getting a crew cab truck but i come to the realization that i really like having access to everything from inside the vehicle.

i need something with tow package. right now my I6 4.0l can tow my trailer and car, but there is minor strain.

i also DO NOT want anything with ALL TIME 4WD. i want something with 2WD and 4WD (4x4)

so i have narrowed it down to SUV's lol . i have looked into Tahoes BUT i HATE that the rear windows will not go down but 6" which i find annoying , i understand child safety windows but not even half down is stupid.

i would LIKE V8 but it isnt necessary. want something thats tough. someone mentioned a mitsubishi montero and i about punched them.

also have to have something that HAS lift kits available, like front and rear solid axels but not a must.

so what should i do ? keep my ZJ semi-restore it, buy better condition ZJ or make a new purchase ?

thanks for your time and interest.

Do NOT take out a loan to "fix" up a 93 model vehicle. How much are you spending to fix things on it now? How often do you tow? It's best not to go into debt, especially in this economy.

I also would not take out a loan to "fix" anything, or for that matter to buy a "toy" either. If you need another vehicle, now is the time to take a loan out. Interest rates are low (so I hear). I'd suggest saving as much as possible, selling the ZJ you have (if you don't need to to drive everyday), and then get the minimal amount of a loan possible. If you have to take a loan out to fix a 93' model Jeep, you are spending more than it's worth. (my thinking that most 93' model Jeeps of any kind can be had for less than $2000 -stock)

SUV w/ towing package, bout the only thing I can think of that would tow GOOD would be an Excursion and some Suburbans. If your total trailer/load weight is below 5K you should be fine with most of the smaller SUV's with V8's or powerful V6's.

i REALLY want an Excursion with the International turbo diesel 4x4 but they are about impossible to find.

i guess you take out loans for things important to you . my rig is important to me ;)

If you're taking out a loan to repair items on your ZJ to keep it reliable and plan on keeping it for years to come then more power to ya. If you're just gonna sell it soon then you're going to get bit. Of all the Jeep models ZJ's hold their value the least. Most used ZJ's I've seen for sale that need some work wouldn't require even another $1000 put into them to make them nice reliable DD's. For a very nice low mileage 1993 ZJ with some correctly, nicely done mods I'd be very surprised to see it bring $3000.

If you're talking about looking at Tahoes and Excursions, and worried about availabity of lift kits, then you're obviously not planning on really using it for real wheeling. Keep the ZJ for a DD/mall crawler and take the loan out for a actual tow rig, if you tow that much. The 6.0 V8 Burbs don't tow too bad if you have to stick with a SUV. FWIW I was just at the auto auction earlier tonight and saw a very nice Black 1998 Chevy 3500 Ext cab 4x4 Dually 6.5 Turbo Diesel w/137k miles go for $3300. Not the strongest diesel out there but it gets the job done better than a gasser and it's cheap.

One thing that might help you understand my thinking is that I have never taken out a loan for anything nor have I ever financed a vehicle. If I don't have the money then I don't need it. Never had a credit card either and I'm 26. One year ago my girlfriend and I bought a house and the morgtage on it is the first time I have ever taken out a loan.

well theres really no rocks and such around me more less just like trails and such things like smaller trees and fields and i just blazer through that shit with my zj now, i could care less to run over some stuff with an excursion il plow through it . i like the idea of a bigger vehicle although i know it might limited where and what i can do off road. as i said before not so much lookign for maneuverability as much as tough factor not just for looks but for strength not just for towing but knocking stuff over fun stuff like that :) . i dont care about scratching up a newer suv cause its what i enjoy. i like to have 4 door vehicle for friends can join me on my "expeditions". i completely understand about the loan thing and the more i think about it the things i would need to fix anyways i could pay for in short amount of time already replaced engine and tranny (major stuff). thats another point i know everything is going to break eventually but i want something that will last.

After reading this last post, I am starting to wonder where the underage user title is...

...Please, for all wheelers everywhere, stop talking about "blazer"ing over things, tearing up fields, etc. If you are in Charlotte, there is legal wheeling within 2 hours of you. Grow up and stay off the construction sites. It gives us all a bad name.

As for the loan to fix up the ZJ, I would repair as necessary, try to sell it, and use the proceeds to buy something else.

After the first comment of .....my ig is important to me..... I was think that myself. Now after the latest post I'm really starting to wonder........

2-door Tahoe, no rear windows to worry about.

well as much as i would love to entertain this "what is about to be" argument.

i am simply asking for recommendations of vehicles, not where to off-road, not how far to go to legally off road, not what i do on my own time is condoned, and not your opinion on really anything else other than the topic at hand.

if you have nothing to add regarding my initial question, this is a huge forum im sure you can make yourself busy in another thread and not flaming on mine or what i do with my money ,

Thank you IN ADVANCE !

You dont have enough money to fix a ZJ but you want an Excursion? Good luck kid.

But that IS our concern... I am going to leave this thread open for just a tad longer but you are borderline.

We do not condone "busting thru" anything, we wheel in legal places and have ZERO tolerance policy. (Which is why / based on your earilier statement you are teetering on the edge here)

To answer your question, do NOT take a loan out to work on your 93 ZJ. In fact the rig sounds like it is working for you with the exception of not being "quite" strong enough for towing another vehicle behind it. (You can spend 3-5k on a good used 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton pickup that can tow your ZJ and other items as needed....then the ZJ can become more extreme)

Many of us encourage folks to get OUT of debt...just life experience and tons of financial wisdom. I own 4 cars, all paid for with cash, including a new car. If you are interested we can tell you more about WHY we do this...but a personal loan is a bad idea / you will NOT get the cash out of your rig.

(You can drop $3,000 right now in lift, tires, winch, lockers, chromoly axles, etc on your 93 ZJ and have a rig worth $3-4k max...so that stuff added 50 cents on the $1 or less. I will end up with approx $7-8k in my yota when done and it will be worth prob 4-5k at most TO another wheeler)

If you want a v8/towing AND wheeling, that is actually something I struggled with and there is no "right" answer.

The best I came up with is a 1 ton pickup truck, ZERO lift and Class D (or E if they make em) 35-37" BFG Mud Terrains. Cut fenders as needed to make the tires fit, but do not change any of the geometry or you likely have reduced the towing ability.

(See Towing with lifted vehicles thread for more info on that)

I wish you the best of luck...and do ask that you read thru the Tread Lightly website, you may understand our point of view.

how am i over stepping ANY boundaries?

i simply asked a question about recommendations on vehicle.

i never said i was doing ANYTHING illegal . for all any of you know those fields that i "plow" through i or a friend of mine owns. which wouldnt make it illegal. which HAPPENS to be the case .

funny how i go from asking a simple question to getting bombarded with threats of being involved in illegal actions and being booted from this forum. dont be so quick to come to conclusions..

i knew no other way of describing what vehicle i wanted than using tough to describe it. i understand the point of getting out of debt. and in no way am i rich by any means but i work hard for my money and i can afford to do any option/ conclusion i come to. everyone seems to be worried about getting my investment back money wise i dont care about getting money back for resale being that it is very rare of me to sell a vehicle i keep all mine. i want to reap the benefits through functionality of the vehicle.

and please gentleman lets drop the "kid" term, believe me i wish i was still younger than i am, cause if i was younger i wouldnt be spending so much time online and more time out chasing split tail.

i was in hopes of coming to this forum to find mature individuals to conversate about my life issues in regards to my jeep. not be flamed like on these import racer websites, which is becoming a boarder line realization that its not vehicle or age group its more about online forum in and of themselves.

i hope we can all just get over this incident and get back to the OP cause i am very interested to hear everyones opinion on which vehicle they would go with in my situation.

Ok, I pasted your quote above that is in issue... take a 1/2 step back and re-read what you wrote?

...then in your reply a moment ago...."for all you know"...saying it COULD be a friends field....etc.

I own 30 acres....and I STILL TREAD LIGHTLY on my own land, which is why I encourage you to read that website.

WHY is this so important to us... do a search for POWERLINE trails and if you find some really old posts by me and others you will understand that we have LOST the right to wheel on private land....BECAUSE of folks who, in your OWN words, "care less to run over some stuff"

The ecofolks LOVE to have comments like yours...they will quote YOU to Congress...they will quote YOU to the judge who is shutting down access to the OBX....

So give this one more chance, re-read...let us know what you think. I am doing my best to hang loose here and give ya the chance to see it from our side.

let me rephrase and make life easier on everyone :

Here's some options

If you're not towing more than about 5000# and it's only occasionally, you would be ok to go with a 1/2 ton. There's alot of options out there but it mostly falls under personal preference. Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition, Excursion, Durango, V8 ZJ or WJ, V8 Sequoia or 4Runner. They all have their goods and bads. Personally I would go with an older Suburban. Lots of room, good wheelbase for towing, straight axle and pretty damn "tough". You won't be doing any tight trails in it but for most of the local spots it will get you out there and are easily upgraded to one ton axles if needed.

that 94 suburban is crazy . wow very impressive. see another option i was looking into was going with a newer suburban.

i know it limits maneuverability but wow. thanks for the listings!

thats all i wanted. and it is appreciated
