So does anyone around here know anything about these engines?

longevity?
do they leak a lot of oil?
reliability?
who can work on them around NC?

Anything else you can think of?

thanks

this was discussed awhile back, I think Ivan ( RufustheRam ) asked a similar question when looking for a toter or the like.

the leak oil

they are loud

they don't like hills, hope you have gearing

they smoke

they leak oil

they sound really cool when put in front of a 10spd trans with open exhaust ( from half mile away )

2stroke diesel, they can and will run backwards and eat themselves in the process

they are loud

they leak oil

I'll see if I can find the thread

found it

Well I found a bus for sale that has this in it.

did a lot of google reading/searching and everyone says the leak/burn oil, but they also say they are strong and will pull whatever I want. I am curious as to if I got a bus and converted it to RV would I hate the engine in it? or would you be happy with it?

if it were for a farm truck to tinker with, I'd think you found a cool toy

as for a Bus converted into an RV, you really want to work on it on the road ? it may never happen, but the probability is higher with age. towing a bus ain't cheap

RV's are PITA anyway, lot of stuff to keep up with and maintain ( says the guy who just bought a new camper ) add old to the mix, with parts availability and cost. you start passing boat ownership costs.

how big a hole you wanna dig ?

Somewhere over on New Hope Rd, near Marsh Creek, a fellow has an old city bus, it appears he is converting to an RV ( you can see the bus in his backyard from New Hope Rd as you drive by, north bound toward Buffalo Rd. ) stop by and ask him how he's getting along on it. ( I've never had time to stop, and I do not know the guy )

Don't know much about these engines or MCIs, but I have had Blue Bird and Prevost buses. They had the 6V-92 and 8V-92 respectively. Not too bad about oil leaks with a little maintenance when, not if it breaks down. bad for exhaust manifolds and elec probs. Covington diesel does a lot of our stuff. My dad knows more about MCIs than i do, I'll ask him.

But if you stay on top of stuff and do maintenance I do not see what would cause it to fail on the road? I understand not staying on top of stuff..

so what things would put me on the side of road if you take maintenance out of equation?

as for rv's that is what I am looking for and will continue.. I guess just trying to see if diesel pusher/bus vs class A or class C gas puller is the way to go..
I like the idea of bus due to solid chassis and being diesel..

last question what does it cost to replace a 8v71 engine if it did blow up?

thanks for info

Says the guy I found on the side of the interstate with no forward gears.

Any of the large diesel engines are big money to replace if they go. You can't compare cost of ownership with a medium duty diesel to a light duty (like in a pickup - stroke, cummins, or duramax).

I have a 94 model diesel pusher. It's on a spartan chassis (the best one w/o getting into a bus) that is solid blah blah. The oil filter costs $60 and it holds 8 gallons of oil. That's an expensive oil change. The air filter is almost $100. But, I don't drive it everyday like a pick up. That maintenance cost is spread out over time. Also, my coach does have it's inherant nuissance issues. That is to be expected with age. The fridge won't light every time, etc...

Good luck.

On a side note, I wouldn't trade my coach for anything. I could have a nicer trail rig for the money. But, coming back to camp on a 95 degree day, showering in my own shower, and getting out of the shower absolutely freezing because the A/C's have been on all day, that's pretty good for me. Don't tell my wife this (she stays at camp with my 1.5 year old son), but having a chef with me is good too...
