I believe they build some of those in Charlotte. A guy that has done some work on my Jeep works in Charlotte building some kind of military vehicle and this sounds like what he described. I'll have to get more info from him.
Armor Holdings (formally Stewart Stevenson) built the open buggy.
"SRATS is the brainchild of Dr. Kent Stephens, an avid fly fisherman whose favorite place to cast is Alaska. He wanted a vehicle that could go where a horse couldn’t, so he set his extreme off-road specialty shop to work. “These are a great bunch of guys with experience rather than engineering degrees,” Stephens says with a grin. “I asked them to build me a vehicle so I could go fly fishing where others can’t. This now is a hobby run amok.”"
I have seen a few different rigs that the are testing but all have the same stats:
*90+ mph
*traverse an 80-degree slope
*4 seater w/ optional 2 seats outboard
*AM General turbo-charged diesel engine, rated at 340 hp running on JP8 fuel
*132" wheel base
*175" overall length
*4k Payload
*6500lbs curb weight
*8500lbs up armored
*375 mile range
This is one of the vehicles that BCDS, a critical driving skills school that I work for, is currently working with for their upcoming classes. From what I am being told, we will be teaching this platform within the year.
