I've had to jump start m XJ 2 times in the last 2 weeks, seemed like the 3yr old AutoZone Duralast Gold wasnt holding or getting a charge. I drove it to the Zone, but when it was hooked up to their machine, it didnt have enough charge for a test. They jumped me and sent me back home. I took the battery and alternator out and returned to the Zone. They took the battery and kept it overnight to charge it.

The alternator test showed it was bad. When he brought the new alternator out, I asked to have it tested....it failed also  Hmmmm, the guy replaced the belt in the machine and sprayed some starting fluid on a pulley in there. Both my alternator and hte new one tested good, so I left with my old one.

I went back to pick up the battery this morning. It tested bad so I got a free replacement. I figured I would pick up a new belt since I had 140,000 on the original belt. They brought out a Goodyear Gatorback and a Dayco-made Duralast branded belt. The Gatorback the computer showed was ~100mm too long or short, compared to my original. The Dayco belt was right on. The length is shown on both belts (6PK2315...6 ribs, PK-profile, 2315mm I think is the one that matched my original), I'm not sure how the Zone's computer called out the wrong length for the Gatorback.

So just a reminder, don't assume anything when you walk into the parts stores.

Up until about a year ago, Auto zone repeatedly told me that jeep never made a 95 wrangler with the 2.5, manual transmission, power steering and air conditioning. Which is what I have.

LOL, Advance told me the same thing about my 99 TJ with the same setup. THey couldn't even match the belt exactly. They had one a tad smaller and a tad bigger. The smaller one worked though.

This is the way to do it. Educate yourself on what your junk needs as well as how to work their computers/machines. It helps a lot to look things up online before even going to the store. They aren't always auto/computer geniuses...definitely don't rely on them.

:edit: Hell, you're smarter than half of them just knowing how to read a belt's part number...

I even had one of the parts monkeys at Advance tell me that I didn't know what I was talking about when I asked them for a front axle U-joint. He kept bringing me the driveshaft U-joint. Then I even drew them a picture of a front axle and the manager told me that they didn't carry that part. So I politely asked if I could see their paper book and I found the part number for the U-joint and low and behold, they had one in stock!!!!!!!!!!!

No doubt on paying attention. I've learned the hard way to pay attention to part #'s and take the old part with you when you can.

1. - Some of the people running the parts counter don't know any better. They just go by the part # the database gives them.

2. The people who create/edit the databases don't always know what they're doing and make mistakes. The damn things never get edited.

The best parts databases I have seen are the ones most dealers use now - ProQuest Automotive EPC.

Haha they still haven't fixed that. I went through the same ordeal. They were pretty much jackasses about it until I dragged them outside and made them look at it.

I had a little fun..

I went in and asked for a 1350 driveshaft u-joint.. Guy said: ok ( i was in shock, he actually knew what it was )

nope, i was wrong he typed in 1350 as part number and then said Nope we do not carry those :)

I said hmm.. ok how about a 1995 ford f 250 with a v8 gas engine.. driveshaft u-joint he said yup we carry that.. he brought it out and bam it was a 1350 .. so then we took a measuring tape to make sure the end caps were correct size.

guy just stood there looking at us like were crazy.

They are a parts store not a service center.....they will hire ANYONE who may not steal from them, remember this, you get what you pay for.

2315 mm...you have an 8' long belt?

That is why I call the Jeep stealership, get the information from them, say ok thanks and hang up. Then I call Vato Zone or someone similar and see if it is the same part before I buy it.

its 91.14 inches

8' was an approximate.
12 x 8 = 96...

Still DAYUM what a belt
