Depends on what time of year you are planning to go. The Rubicon is above 7,000 feet. Depending on the winter snowfall it may not open until late June or early July. Don't plan on going on a popular 3 day weekend unless you just like a lot of traffic... it can be a real madhouse! First snowfall can come in October, don't even attempt to go after that... ever hear of the Donner Party. Their memorial is just down the road from there.
Moab is pretty much a year round play ground. Much bigger venue and dosen't seem as crowded.
Moab has so many trails and varying terrain... there's something there for everyone and every type of vehicle. Some of the extreme obstacles and steps require a longer wheelbase but if you have at least 33" tires and lockers you can have fun all day long.
I should be good then. At moab how long are the trails? Can you ride several different trails in a day or will I be on one trail for long periods of time. Will I be able to camp?
Also... if you're not going with someone who knows Moab try to tag along with a group that does. It's not a small area and when the sun starts to go down it's almost like a moonscape... people get lost out there.
I would suggest do the Rubicon in August, it's hotter than hell in Reno that time of year but up in the Sierra's it cools down nice at night. You would also be in time for Hot August Nights (Reno), the biggest hot rod show I've ever seen. Moab is great in September, much cooler and clear skies most of the time.
You could do a couple of trails in one day or just play around on the obstacles. There is camping or you can stay in town. I can't tell you much more about Moab, haven't had a chance to get up there yet, but know some guy's here that go 3-4 times a year. I know the Rubicon area... lived in Reno for several years.
Moab is AWESOME! I am not sure when you are planning on going, we are planning another trip the 3rd week of April 06'. You are welcome to come along. It is 2 weeks after the Easter Jamboree and the weather is just perfect.
I went to Moab this summer and it was amazing. Beautiful scenery, awesome wheeling, all the room you need (unlike crowded local trails), and great weather. I've never been to the Rubicon but I wouldn't really want to since I can just go to Moab and its 100's of miles closer.
Salt lake City is a couple hundred miles a way, Denver is 300 miles. Those are the two that have the least expensive flights. My wife flew to Salt lake and drove to Moab from there. See figures the 400 mile round trip was better than a 4000 mile round trip with 4 other guys
We went to Moab this past June. Drove from Fayetteville, NC to Moab and took our time. We spent 11 days wheeling there and had an absolute blast. Some days we ran one or 2 trails, some we ran 4 or 5. It just depends on how long you want to be out. We wheeled for 12 hours straight some days. June wasn't as hot as I figured it would be and it only rained on us once. We camped in town and the furthest we drove to a trail was about 10 miles. If I had a whole week or longer to wheel I would go to Moab.
NC Zuk, how long did it take you guys driving out there? how many rigs and how did you tow them out there? one/two/three car trailers, a towing company, etc...

I towed my Zuk out on an 18 foot tandem axle trailer with my F-350. My buddy Gred did the same. We had people come from GA, Arizona, Cali, Utah, one and Mo. Everyone but the Arizona Crown towed via trailer. We took it in 3 days breaking up the trip. But, my friends from Atlanta drove straight through to Moab in 28 hours.
we are expecting a few guys (atleast 3 rigs) trying to get out there sometime next year, and trying to find how others have done it,. looking for the most "convienent" way
my girlfriend and I are leaving March 15th for a month. Plan to see as much as possible and ski for a week too. Plan to meet up with some friends in Moab around March 5th. Can't wait!
I have been on parts of the Rubicon there is alot of tight places and granite to climb over it is basicaly a one way trail going west to east on the week end. during the week day you can go either way but still it can bea PITA. I have found that the best thing to do is camp at Loon lake and go out and play on the rocks. If you want to run the whole trail you will need to figure out how to get you tow rigs to the other end. there is no parking near the trail head at the Lake Taho end. the Lake Taho end is in a residential area. Ther can be snow even in the late spring. I love the scenery.
We drove it straight through on the way home and took around 29 hours pulling a gooseneck trailer with a crew cab PSD dually with two jeeps on it. It was a haul but we had 4 drivers. On the way out we drove to NM and spent the night and then went to moab. This April we plan on a stop on the way out and a stop on the way back. Hopefully we will have two vehicles pulling two Jeeps each and a motorhome pulling one. Again the dates for this coming April if anyone is interested the dates are 4/21 thru 4/29.
