Monitoring Neighborhood Crime ? Police Reports ?

Neighbor had some stuff stolen from his truck yesterday. It was in his driveway but wasn't locked, but that's besides the point. Thefts have been growing in the general area and I was curious as to how many police reports have been filed.

I found one nice on line google map someone had made but can't seem to find a raw list of data anywhere.. cool map here:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?f=s&...97275711160.00044c1030afac0158759&ll=35.96804

I've been searching for a place online to locate police reports so that I could construct my own map. I think it would help show that we actually have a problem in the area. Many crimes seem to be small/petty but it seems like there are a lot of them and the police merely respond after and take a report and dust for prints.

Any ideas of places to look for this information?

nothing to add, other than I do look after my one good neighbor. But if you get them to actually dust for prints, you are lucky, normally I hear people who are victims, that the police or Sheriffs dept did NOT dust, just took a report.

Look to see if you have a Citizens Advisory Council or something like that. I dunno what they have in WF, but Raleigh has community liason officers assigned to each CAC. Should be your first point of contact for crime data and policing requests. RPD will step up random patrols and security checks based on neighborhood requests.

if you find me a list of the crime reports for where ever you are looking for I can probably make you a map of where the crime is heaviest, etc.

^^We set up a neighborhood watch, those officers are glad to come out and meet concerned citizens^^

We have a "community policing" officer -- assigned to work with community groups. He can run lists for specific neighborhoods in our town to bring to community watch meetings, etc. You may have similar.

Thanks for the input. I wanted to check the facts/data before I complained much and if I did the complaint would be based on facts not just level of concern.

This issue was the last straw for me... The real problem is, one (exactly 1) neighbor has adult children living there ~18+ years. One is a wanna be thug who has having an increasing # of his boys hanging out in the street or where ever to all hours of the night.

Problem is the this 'family' doesn't seem to work much and is otherwise home almost ALL the time and the other neighbors myself included worry that retaliation would be very easy since everyone else actually have jobs.

Our subdivision consists of a dead end culdesac street with 19 houses. We all like not having a HOA and mostly all get along (or ignore each other) just fine. This one house is slowly dragging the neighbor hood down. It took almost 120 days for the one house to sell and that was well below other current house sales in the area (even for current market conditions).. There are junk cars in the yard, they park on the front lawn, line up all their 'stuff' on the front lawn for display, etc...

I have a good relationship with the dad. He's a nice guy and anytime I've complained aboutor discussed neighbor things, he's always taken care of things. I get the impression latly he's at his wits end with things and isn't sure how to handle things himself. What would you all suggest as a way to help remedy the situation without this turning ugly. I'm prepared to fight the good fight but would rather avoid it if possible.

Anyone know if its possible to turn a public street into a gated community? (and still maintain normal trash pickup, leaf collection etc.. )

Any other ideas or solutions? Short of a full blown HOA?

How would be

Um I basically said the same thing after the last meeting. My understanding is that my elderly neighbors are gonna be watching a lot the windows in more often. As well as if there is anyone in the neighborhood that doesn't belong we are supposed to jot down their license plate number. We are supposed to contact each other if we are gonna be out of town and let our neighbors know if someone who doesn't usually stay with us is gonna be coming into town or something.I guess Nosy Neighbor's with Notepads was already taken so they call it neighborhood watch.

Depending on how your police are set up, find out who the beat cops are that are assigned to your area. When we were having problems with one of our neighbors, I talked to the beat cops (usually could spot them pulled off somewhere in the neighborhood doing paperwork, and would just pull up). I got them to where when they were in the immediate area, they'd just pull down our street and turn around. I think it did a lot, just the presence at random times.

We had the some problems at our church a few years ago. I talked to the beat cops, and they actually started parking in our back lot to do their paperwork (naps, etc)...that visibility helped curtail the vandalism.

You might also talk with your town's code enforcement department. Code enforcement addresses things like junk cars, lack of upkeep, etc. Sometimes it's a pain (like when I got a letter and threats of fines when my grass got a little tall). But they did get my neighbor to clean up some, when they started fining him $100 a day for junk.

Likely not them doing the thefts, based on a chat I had with a LEO bud responding to crap in my neighborhood... He said even the most lowlife scum will NOT ripoff their immediate neighbors, because they'd be instantly under suspicion. Kinda on the old adage of dogs not crapping where they sleep.

We were seeing a buttload of thefts/vandalism/etc happening and assumed it was radiating from the nearby trailer parks & ghetto hoods... after a long running investigation, they found it was predominately coming from scum living on the *other* side of town (government housing )!
They'd ride the last PM bus (2100) to our side, walking into trailer parks/slummies (since there are tons of foot/bus traffic in those areas) & then thru the woods into our development, prowling/thieving all night, stashing it in the bushes (near a road), catching the first AM bus (0600) home, and coming back with a truck to load the goods after AM traffic slowed (1000-1100). Once the LEOs figured it out, they increased their presence in those outlying areas and when alarms were fired in OUR dev., started responding *TO* the outlying areas to catch the scum coming out thru the woods! :D

That, in combo with a "Nosy Neighbor" program has stopped all but teenage vandalism (their "parents" defaulted on the mortgage & were finally booted last month)

Forgot to mention that after the PoPo got everything under control, the mail theft began...

Surprisingly, the feds/USPS did *NOT* mess around there! They set up surveillance rigs w/ cameras that netted an entire ring (that followed a 1/4 mile behind the carriers) within a couple days of our Nosy Neighbor email notice... we'd suspected that we were getting hit (even the state can't screw up mailing a drivers license 3 times  ) and installed a locking mailbox! :flipoff2:
