I get to pick a gift for my 10 year anniversary at work and they don't have anything I don't already have to pick from except an MP3 player ( JVC ). So I thought I might get it for my daughter. Now the ??s I know it plays songs you down load but where do you down load them from ? How long does it take to down load( dial up ) ? How many songs will they hold ? Its 5?? MB I think.

Thanks Allen

you can burn them from you cd collection.....

download them llegally from napster.. like 99 cents a song. if I say the word illegal and say you can download for free from limewire they will lock the thread

ohh.. oopps. T- minus 10 secs before thread is lock.ed...

That's going to depend on the quality of the file and the length of the song. 128kbps is considered near CD quality they'll average 5-7MB per song. Higher quality files can run up towards 10MB per song. I'm thinking that will equate to really looooong download times over dialup.

Like purpleTJchick said, if you've got a CD drive in your computer and a recent copy of Windows Media Player, you can rip your own .mp3 files from your current CD collection. Just pop in the CD, open Media Player and select the option to Rip the music. The default is to .wma, but you can change that option to .mp3. From there you copy the files to the player.

Edit: There are also other free apps out there that will rip CDs for you. I just used WMP as an example because it's going to be on most newer machines and won't require another download.

At 128Kbps you're talking about meg a minute, and I doubt the player only has 5 MB of flash.

128 Kbps is decent for a kid that's gonna be bopping around and not listening seriously.

If she's serious, then you're looking at rates of 192 or 256 kbps. (The application will mention encoding rates).

I'd also google on the Lame encoder and flac encoder. AND, technically, depending on the mood of the RIAA at the time, ripping your own CD's and playing them on your own portable devices is considered illegal. This is kinda debatable. They've not gone after Bush, who has the Beatles in his iPod. They're not available through iTunes, so someone ripped it for him.

-- If you get it, post up and someone can step through it with you.

Thanks guys. I'll post if I get it.

there's some freeware called FreeRip that I highly recommend...

you can put your CD in your computer...open FreeRip...and then it will search on the internet and find the CD, and populate title, artist, genre, year...plus all the title tracks...saves a lot of typing...

there are others out there, but I have used this one and been very satisfied...
