I have a 79 Bronco with a 351m with a 2b carb auto with 36 inch tires and 4.56 gears and I get about 6mpg I just thought that was low and I think it shoud be better. Just trying to find out what I could do to make it better. I think the carb maybe rich but not sure on how to tell or adjust. Any info will help.

Hey i have a 79 f150 400 2bbl. i have had problems keeping a good power valve in my carb (2bbl motorcraft, they keep going bad) also had the stock fuel pump go bad and start weeping out gas externally. both of these things absoulutly killed my mileage till i figured em out. when the fuel pump went out i got 100 miles to one full tank of gas  i have put 3 power valves in my carb in like 2 months. its not that big of deal cause the two barrels can be off in like 10 mins. but i'm gonna put a 650 holley on it soon so i'm not too worried about it for the time being. hope this helps:bronco:

What kind of MPG do you get when everythingis working like it should?

First off, are you correcting the mileage to account for the over size tire roll out ? Larger tires travel further per rotation than smaller tires, so you may well be going further per mile than you think.

I'd have to dig it up, but there are calculators for tire diameter ( true roll out measurement, not advertised side wall dia) x gearing and a few other factors ( divide by this, carry the 2 yadda yadda......)

Secondly, don't expect "good" mileage from that setup, decent MAY be possible, but good ain't gonna happen.

My '73 GMC w/350sb t350, 4.10 gear on 255/79/16 gets 9.5 at best, and thats unloaded. No overdrive is the real killer, if it had OD, I'd probably get 11ish, maybe 12. I try to keep out of the secondaries, cuz you can see the gas needle move when they come in ( 600cfm Edelbrock)

Granted 9.5 is stellar compared to 6mpg, but with the huge tires, it's gonna be tough.

I have accounted forthe bigger tires I only get 5-6 highway so with gas pricesthe way they are it cost me 50 cent a mile on highwy its worse in town I have got to do something. Im not looking for something good just better than I get now lke maybe 10 or so that would be great.

Honestly, if it's your trail beater too, leave it alone, and get a cheap shit box, you'll spend more cash trying to make mileage from onions than you'll save.

Craigslist is loaded with 'em

merely a suggestion.

Invest your money into an intake & 4bbl carb. Believe it or not, the 4bbl gets better gas mileage than a 2bbl, unless the skinny petal hits the floor pan alot (as Blkvoodoo said earlier). A 600 to 650 cfm carb should do the trick, others can shed more light on the subject.
Just my .02

what brand intake and carb would you recomend

Edelbrock vs. Holley = Ford vs. Chevy

Both build wuality products. Both will occaisonally have a DOA unit... Whatever side one the guy you are talking to has had, will determine their opinion.

My Personal preference is a Edelbrock Intake and a Holley Carb

I have looked on line but how do I know what carb to get there are so many different ones

If you go off road, get a carb that's capable of handling your needs. Me, I would go with Holleys off road carb, the name escapes me, (not enough Java yet).

I found a rebuilt holley on ebay for around 600 shipped and tuned to my truck (they say all you have to do it set the idle and its ready to go) well may get that one unless anyone else knows of a better deal

other than you could get a 670cfm Holley truck avenger NEW in box for $425 from Jegs ?

ok, so you may have to tune it......

$600 sounds steep

I personally dont like the TA....
Id drop 350 bones on a standard holley 600 cfm vac sec elec choke and rock on

I agree, I was using it as a price comparison

My GMC has an Edelbrock on it, simple simple, no issues yet.

I've had too many issues with Holley's in the past ( warped metering plates, stripped float bowls, blown power valves.....)

I don't wanna dick with it all the time

this reads as though you were paying $600 for it.

Is why I was confused

$200 doesn't sound too bad
