I kind of asked this question as an aside in an upcoming events thread, but figured i might get more/better answers in a thread of its own. Sometime in the next few weeks i will probably be making a weekend trip up to Callalantee. I think most people who've been there are aware of the quality of the facilities... Well, its not a problem for me, but the girlfriend would like slightly nicer accommodations. Any suggestions?

I guess it wouldn't be hard to find a hotel, but I was thinking more along the lines of a campground, with maybe some decent showers and stuff, in that general area.

Any ideas or experiences?

If you go for a motel, the Mountain Empire is a pretty decent place. The people can bairly speak english, but they are nice, and the place is clean. Whatever price they give you on the phone, ask if thats the best they can do, they will come down for you.

Not sure about a near by campground.. I thought the closest 15+ miles away...

As for motel.. the Americourt is about 4 miles from the park and is about 60.00/night and inlcudes a pretty decent breakfest...

Here is the info...

Johnson County Welcome Center Campground
716 S. Shady Street, Mountain City, TN 37683
423-727-5800 or jcwc@preferred.com

When you turn right off 421 to head to the trails, its on the left..

And there are no roosters.

another option is the cabin,it'll sleep 6 on beds or more:huggy:

It's got two rooms with two beds each(small) and a fold out couch, stove, fridge ac showers and washer dryer........not a bad deal for a couple of couples.
$100 a night

Thanks for all the responses guys.

The one JPH suggested sounds like it might fit the bill just fine. I don't remember ever seeing the welcome center, but if it is between 421 and callalantee, it is convenient enough for me.

JPH, were there cleanish facilities where she could shower, as that is probably the most important thing to her.

That campground is litterly right across the street from where you turn right off of 421 to go to the park. There is a log cabin out front, with a small paved street beside the cabin that leads you up to the campground. There is a bath house there, it has toilets and showers, and as far as i remember is clean enough for most people to deal with.

And there are no roosters.

Those arent normal roosters at Callalantee. I believe someone set their internal clock way wrong.....they start crowing at about 2:30am and stop around sun up.....

Its been a while since i camped there.. but the conditions were better then the camp grounds at callalantee.. But they are not as nice as the ones at crawfords.

However, someone has stolen one of the crappers out of the mens bathroom, why you would have a need to steal a used crapper is beyond me... This was some time ago, so it should have been replaced by now..

And did i mention there are no roosters?

Yup welcome Center camping is where it is at..

it was Cheap.. and pretty clean..

here is pick of my old setup parked next to bath house

another of setup getting ready to pull out.

one more pic

The Welcome Center CG is pretty nice. The bath house is MUCH nicer than Callalantee. I think it's $20 a night, they give you a key for the bath house so only paid campers can get in. Over all, MUCH better than the trail head campground if you don't mind a little ride to the trails.

But no alkyhol allowed in that CG... the fuzz there don't play either!

yup, but since I am a big boy I could live without it for a weekend :)
