My CJ made an "EPIC FAILS" thread!!!!

I get the impression they don't understand what an "epic fail" is...

They'd probably shat themselves if they saw a photo of it working..

I recall that photo. What exactly was the purpose?

Long story short, friend and I were sandblasting parts of our 715's, out at an, um, nearby government facility. We were planning to use a forklift to yank the beds, but we found out the night prior that we wouldn't have access to it the next day, so I whipped this up.

Worked great. I was going to turn it back into steel stock on the shelf when we were done, but it has proven to be too handy. i can rig it up in 5-10 minutes when I need it.

you think this is OSHA approved?

That crane is the most useful use of tube so far. I have used one to move my cooker (weights 1k lbs), pulling parts, moving axles, and raising a bridge.

how does that not lose balance?? Are you anchoring the CJ or something or is the photo just playing games on my eyes?

Using total guesstimates:
Jeep weight 4000 lbs
Jeep center of gravity 3ft behind front wheels
Crane weight negligible (for simplicity's sake)
Crane hook location 12ft from front wheels

4000*3 is the resisitive torque of the jeeps weight relative to the fulcrum. That is 12,000 ft-lbs. If the crane hook is 12ft out from the wheels, and there is 12,000ft-lbs of resistive torque, then you could lift about 1000 lbs (12,000ft-lbs divided by 12ft=1000 lbs).

Round numbers of course, but I think the numbers are close enough to not worry about lifting 500lbs. One thing to remember is that all of the resistive weight ends up on the front axle. Thats why forklifts have short, beefy axlehousings.

600# is the most I've picked up...stuck a 4x4 block between the spring and bump stop...wouldn't do much more....it was starting to unload the rear axle, so that means that most of the weight of the entire Jeep was starting to balance on the front axle (D30)...moved really slow, and kept it straight. Does great at 400# or so.

I'm going to build one for my 715...maybe off the rear

having the crane on the rear is much better. I could lift roughly 1000lbs from the back of my toyota. the front would unload a little bit but it wasnt bad. Lifting from the front I am not able to lift as much since there is no weight in the rear of my yota.
