i'm pulling my lock right out of the rear xj d44 axle to put in my front hp d44 from a 77 f150.
i'm using the carrier from a isuzu rodeo,
i went to swap them out and have around 1/4 of a bigger gap.

i had a post on NAXJA and was told that they would swap over, seems like they wont.

Sounds like your gear ratios are on opposite sides of the break. There are two different D44 carriers, one for 3.73- and another for 3.92+. The rodeo must have a 3.73- carrier since the ring gear mounting surface is further away. You can purchase a spacer to deal with this from most any gear vendors.

there is some sort of difference in the Isuzu d44.JoeD was telling me about it a while back.We were talking about lockers and said he was going to have to do some shimming to make it work.He didn't like the idea.Pm him on here or possibly get on the planet Isuzu site .

pre 98 isuzu D44 are the same (inside carrier dimensions) as other non isuzu D44 carriers.
However 98+ isuzu D44 have a different inside carrier dimension. You will need to use 4 or 5 (normally 5) side gear factory hardend shims to take up the gap.
Or as i did years ago I made shims out of hardend and ground A2,the shims where about .1515 thick each.
Sorry I don't have anymore shims only made 5 sets.
I just have folks use 5 factory shims(the ones between side gear and carrier) you will not have any issues if you use "harded shims"/
This only pertains to 98+ open carriers

The pinion in the 98+ Isuzu D44 is also different than pre 98's it bearing surfaces are about D60 size.
More info on pirate in isuzu section.
There are pics on cardomain, but its down right now.

Wonder if there's any issues with spine engagement after all that?

No issue with 'spline engagement" there isn't any between carrier and "side gears" they ride on .0315 shims from factory.
I replaced them with .1515 shims and there is still over 3/4" engagement into carrier, for the side gears.

You can see how wide gap is,notice "side gears " real close to the carrier sides.
