My new little project

So this will be comprehensive and probably long in the making, but I just aquired an 88 Ford Bronco with a EFI 460 in it to compliment my 88 Ford Bronco with an efi 302 in it. The 460 had low oil pressure, so I've pulled the engine and completely tore it down, bearings are shot. So the plans are as follows:
Put in stroker kit, 514-520 somewhere in there. Warm over the rest of the engine, probably port work on the heads, maybe larger valve, injectors, ignition, headers, etc. Once I get that back in, I'm going to take the body off and freshen up the frame, new body bushings, raise the gas tank. Put the body from my 302 88 on it (much better shape, doesn't have the red interior like my new one). Hopefully the C6 and NP205 are without problems. It's still on the 8.8 and TTB, I've got a rear 60 and a HP44, but I'm thinking I better find a front 60 to avoid many headaches.
Once that's all done, I'll pull the drivetrain from my 302 88 and put it in an early bronco that my fiance wants to have. It will be another fun project that my fiance assures me she will be assisting on. Ideally, that will remain EFI.
So, here are the pics of the 460 bronco and the 302, just to get an idea, hopefully, as time (and money) allows, I'll work and update this link. Bear in mind, I just learned I'm starting law school in the two weeks, so neither time nor money will be readily available, but I figure working on the truck will be a good stress reliever.

No oil cooler?

Saf-t scissors, that's funny you mentioned that, I have one on my 302 bronco, do you know me? But for the 460, I doubt it, it had a single filter relocation, but had to use a total of 3 90 degree elbows to get around the cross member. Since my main problem was low oil pressure, I'm doing everything I can to avoid that, so I cut the cross member to allow the filter to screw directly to the block. If it runs hot, I may consider running the cooler with relocated filters, but for now I will not.

johnski, there are a bunch of great guys on that board, I used to be a regular there, but for personal reasons, I've kept myself away. But certainly a load of great information and help to be found there for bronco owners, for sure.

I swore I recognized your name from over there. Never knew you were a carolina boy, too. Well, keep us posted on the buildup.

I wasn't when I was on FSB, I was in Atlanta, but I was in Greensboro for 5 years before that, and I've been in Raleigh for about 2 years now.

This will be very slow going, but I'll update as I go and hopefully we'll be able to wheel together some day!

It will probably run hot. Those motors came from the factory with a ~12" square stacked-plate oil cooler in front of the radiator. They have a tendency to warm up while running on the highway. Depending on the condition of the cooling system, the truck may never have gotten "hot", but it was probably cooking the oil. It would explain low oil pressure in what looks to be a recently-built motor.

I'd treat the motor as if it's been oil starved, especially since you're going through it anyway. Make sure to replace the cam bearings, and take a good look at the top end, etc.

I don't know if you can still get the factory oil filter/cooler boss, but Summit probably sells an adapter that would work.

I can get you pictures of the factory part if it would help.

That would be great, I'd be curious how they did theirs. I took my 302's from the block the the two filters, to the oil cooler, back to the block.

Got pics. Sorry about the delay. Took them a couple of wks ago, then forgot to get them off the camera.

The motor is upside down in the photos. That piece screws right in place of the normal oil boss, and a filter screws to the side as shown. The two ports for the cooler hoses are there as well.

Thanks for the pics, I'll keep that in mind as I go, if I end up having to add an oil cooler I'll be able to added during an oil change.

As an update, I believe I'm going to move away from the stroker idea, atleast for this build. For several reasons, 1. this is my first build, 2. I don't have a tow vehicle, so I want to be able to drive it to and from events, and possibly tow my fiance's rig, if I ever get it, and 3. the money I would spend in it, I can invest in headers, ignition, etc that will all be used if I do stroke it, but will speed up the turn around on this project, that will still be drawn out.

Well, I said it would be slow going, I didn't think 15 months between post, but here we go.
Everything got pushed back for the wedding, but now that that is completed, I have some free money. So, some updates:
1. sticking with the stroker idea, will get into that with the tax return, but still planning 514-521.
2. I've done a couple of oiling mods to help the block move it around.
3. I've started some home port work on my heads, no where near done. So far, I've only gotten the intake done on one head, but here are a few pics.

4. but my big news are some new parts I aquired. In my research, I was told that the factory intake and fuel rails were going to limit the performance of the stroker, and since I was sticking with the fuelie heads, and there are NO aftermarket intake or rails for the 460 efi, I was stuck. I actually ported the intake, but then I came across two seperate deals that fixed this for me!
My new fuel rails

Notice the angle the injectors go in, another great idea by ford, I figured I wouldn't be able to build my own to match the angles, but I luckily found, what I believe to be, the only aftermarket rails ever made to work with these angles.
These things are HUGE!

The new rails on the new intake. I'm going with different injectors, I'm think 39 lbs. Also the purple is not staying.
awww.supermotors.net_getfile_588244_fullsize_100_1186.jpg

Notice that whoever built this intake, cut the factory runners out, leaving the water passages, injector bungs, and basically the mounting surface to the heads, so it will bolt to the fuelie heads, and match up to the runners, but still move a lot more air.
awww.supermotors.net_getfile_588249_fullsize_100_1191.jpg

That's about it, I'm expecting a few goodies for X-mas, namely a throttle body, but the big movement should come after the tax return.
Any thoughts, comments, critiques, etc are appreciated!
