When it tries to start at least. If any of you have ever heard a Maz start, it makes this whine for several seconds before kicking over. Well the volvo is making the same whining noise. It started yesterday on my way to work. Car died pulling into the club but I was able to restart it. Check engine light came on and I was able to go about halfway up the hill before it died on me again. This time it will not restart and is making the whining noise. Had it towed to Clark Tire in Boone by the guys at Swedish Werks in Foscoe (great people by the way). Clark is saying it might of jumped timing or the motor could be shot.... Getting it towed to the Volvo dealership in Charlotte here in a little bit hoping its the ETM (which is under warrenty/recall).

Im kind of looking for any ideas on whats going on and what to expect.

Whoops. Its a 2000 Volvo S70 2.4L non-turbo. It wasn't the fuel pump making the noise it was coming more from the engine. I don't know if it was the starter refusing to engage or what.

probably the noise the engine makes when there is no compression. ie the timing belt/chain has broken or skipped. that is most likely why the mechanics are telling you this. if this has happened the damage depends a lot on the type of engine. if it is an "interference" engine then the valves will have made contact with the tops of the piston (lots of damage). if its not a interference then there may only be minor or no damage.

this all depends on the design of the engine, volvo will know the answer

by the way, i hope this isnt the case and it turns out to be something minor.

You said Vovlo, my guess would be pull down pants, double over and grab your ankles.:flipoff2: I hope not for ya but then again they don't call them stealerships for nothing!

Timing belt snapped.... Engine is trashed. Pissed off since the timing belt was replaced 16k ago at the now defunct hickory volvo dealership...

When timing belts go in Volvo's they have a bad way of fouling up the the valves.
