I picked up a 1992 s10 a while back, dent free body good running gear, the only thing wrong with it is it’s 2wd. In high school I would frequent the local mud big every weekend and one guy had a red s10 with tons on it and 40” tires, this truck is red And I want to do the same thing to this truck, do I want tons or do I want 1/2 ton stuff under, I would like it to be streetable and trailable, I already got sky off-road design front leaf spring hanger kit, any input would be greatly appreciated

Yeah I would certainly skip the 1/2 ton route and go straight to one tons. 05+ Super Duty axles are cheap, plentiful and plenty strong from the factory. The only drawback is cutting all the brackets off really sucks. 99-04 axles were leaf sprung and much simpler to clean off and still pretty strong. Take your pick, but I’d seriously not bother with half ton axles unless you get a stupid deal on a set already built with Chromos and all the goodies. Otherwise by the time you buy half tons and spend the money on gears and upgraded shafts, you have the same amount in stock one tons just as strong that will only be stronger after better shafts.

Before you go all gung-ho on Ford axles…correct me if I’m wrong, but Ford stuff is driver drop and most Chevy stuff is passenger drop. Do all the math first. Might be cheaper axles, but not after you add in a non stock transfer case.

When GM went IFS I believe all of their cases went driver side drop. Quick google-fu shows a factory 92 S10 case to be dsd.

To be honest, you might be better off purchasing one that is done. @Mac5005 has a bad s10, and likely not much more money that you will spend to build the one you have.

Otherwise, if its just a driver I would go half tons, but if you want to wheel it, 1tons for sure.

This sounds like the best idea. Thanks for the mention.

Got this off the forum a while back, fixed and re fixed and upgraded it for my dad to wheel while following tube buggies around in the woods. It’s truly built to beat on all weekend, and carry tools and spares.

Asking $10k but feel free to make an offer.

We have a rock pile and dirt hills at our shop where we can show you everything works as it should.

Full disclosure, one of the last trips out the converter started acting up. Got back, changed the converter, tested it, and discovered the trans was done. So while we had it apart, we cleaned and painted what we could so it would be clean and nice for new owner. My dad replaced this rig with a full tube buggy so it hasn’t been beat on since the last trip when the trans started acting up, hence why it’s all clean underneath.
