Hey guys quick question, i might be purchasing a car in NC this week and my vehicle now is registered in SC. Does any one have any information on what i can do about the transfer of tags? or what i need to do? I see i can get a temp plate for 45 days if that is right does any one know how long that could take? sorry if that is confusing just wondering

The North Carolina title must have the sellers signature notarized. Does NOT have to have the buyers signature notarized. Just bring your South Carolina tag with you when you come to pick it up. You've got somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 days to transfer it on paper to the new vehicle. Just take the NC title to your License plate agency (or wherever you get a title in SC) and they will take the old one and have a new SC title made for you and it will be sent to you in the mail. South Carolina title does not need to be notarized by either party.

ok only problem. Ill be driving the new car home and my friend will be driving mine home? what to do there? just follow close?

you should insure the day you take possession or your fuct if you get an accident or pulled over.

I think in your case you can keep his tag on the car and turn it in when you apply for a tag in NC or if the guy keeps it he has to turn it in... just be sure to have signed over title with you until you get paperwork taken care of.

also you have 10 days to pass inspection.

Or just go to the nc lic plate agency and get a temp (3 day) tag. Something like $30 though.

Just get a bill of sale, dated, and preferably notarized as well and keep it handy. If you get pulled you'll be okay with that most likely.

One other point, in NC you can actually hang another tag from another vehicle on a new one for up to 30? days I believe. Didn't really know about that one when I drove the XJ from Boone to Statesville with no tag
