Anyone got a connection for inspections, or know a shop that isn't very scrupulous(spl?)? PM me, I need one.

Or two.

I would say that a shop could loose their licens for that. Just fix the vehicle enough to get it to pass.

Whats wrong with it?

Then there's my silverado, with the too dark window tint. Spare me the lecture (if you're going to give one), I'll take the windows out of it if I have to.

The 1998 with no cat will not pass no matter what. OBD2 vehicles have to be plugged up and any tampering with the emissions equipment will set off the check engine light and cause it to fail. Fix it and it will pass.

You can try your chances with rolling the windows down on the Silverado and hoping the inspector doesn't check. Just make sure it's a nice sunny day out. If the inspector cares about hid job he will check though. I've had people show up for inspections and roll all the windows down when it's 30 degrees out. Kind of raises a red flag.

I agree with marvilusone, I inspect cars in gaston county. but if its something like that, I wont pass it... only thing wrong with rolling the windows down is in gaston county there is a inspector that will come in with dark tint and roll down his windows. DMV officer said that you must roll the windows up if the fuse is out you fail it because you can check it.

I once changed windows in a truck to pass inspection. The inspector told me I couldn't have dark tinted windows, but windows were not required.

You guys are lucky.
in Maryland, both doors are required, and windows must be roll-able.
So there is no way to avoid the tint rule, AND if you have a Jeep, even if it is an old beater w/o doors, you have to find good doors to put on it.
Luckily inspection is only once, but it is a complete anal-raping of the vehicle. Very few used cars pass the first time. I was failed on an '02 Mazda b/c one 1 shock was leaking a little fluid, you had to raise the dust cover to even see it.

that sucks, however i would think on CJs you could get away without doors, i mean on older cjs the doors were options anyway so unless they could prove it was purchased with doors you shouldn't need them right...

Code flat out states you must have doors.

Only way around it is if the vehicle is 20+ years only, you can get "historic" tags, which make you exempt from all requirements. However historic tags are also "only for weekend and occasional use for club activities, not for daily or general highway use." so you can't use them for a DD.
My point is - suck it up and fix the problem, and be thankful you live in one of the more slack states, it could be alot worse.

they have never pluged up my truck at an inspection, only a safety, visual inspection. it is an 01 2500hd.

Is there any benefit to not having a cat?

All 1996 and newer vehicles have to be plugged up for the OBD2 emissions inspection if you live in an emissions county except vehicles with a GVWR over 8500lbs and diesel vehicles. I just didn't feel like typing all that last night. LOL

None whatsoever other than to make it stinky. Think about how much bigger the chamber is in the cat than the pipe. I'd bet that the cat will flow more than the pipe. (Unless it's one of those crappy GM pellet types.)

If you live in a Safety only county, could you get away with not having a Cat?

No, IIRC inspection still includes "visual" smog check - e.g. look and see that equipment is there.

Nope, they'll still fail visual.

I had a car once that had no emissions stuff on it whatsoever. This was back in the sniffer-age. They stuck the sniffer in the exhaust and my emaissions were way below the legal limit, so I should have passed, right?

Nope, failed me on the visual. What crap.

Only benefit is that it's easier on your wallet to not have to buy one.

as to the OP, ya, ask someone to post up there illegal inspection place. riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight... Even if I had one, this would certainly increase the chances of not having one much longer.

Thats what I thought, so why not save the $$ to get one and have the piece of mind knowing you will pass inspection?

in NC, there is no "safety" onlyanymore. Now everything OBDII (96 and up) needs the emmissions inspections. If you're diesel or 95 and older, its safety only, regardless of county.

Yeah Watauga is definitely safety only. I had to go to 4 different places till one of them had the equipment to test emissions properly. Alot of the shops up here are only Safety certified, and since the jeep is registered in Caldwell, alot of them couldnt do it.

I didnt know they visual check though...good to know!
