After reading the law about ONLY being able to lift a vehicle in NC 6" OVER or UNDER max from stock ride height, including tires, and the parts about "if the vehicle see's some off road use" and getting " written permission from the commisioner of motor vehicles", what does everyone do about this? I tried to call to get a letter, but haven't been contacted back yet, and the vaguness of the statute makes it almost impossible to KNOW what THEIR interpritation of the law is ( their= law enforcement). The state attorney general is supposed to be calling me back to "clarify" the statute to me, and answer any questions i have, but i just wanted to know what most everyone else does in NC?

They haven't been enforcing it here in Jacksonville. I see guys all the time running 38's-44 and even a guy on 49's. I am getting ready to sit mine up on 38's so I hope they don't start enforcing it.

The part I have a issue with is " ANY PASSENGER MOTOR VEHICLE" in section d. ANY sounds inclusive of "a multipurpose passenger vehicle which is constructed either on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off road operation." as stated in section a. I wish the attorney general woul dcall me back to "clairify this so i can be at ease and not just anticipating to get cited. DONT WANT THAT!

I asked a cop about that this past week actually, and he said they only enforce it if the person is driving like they should be.

i got a ticket a year or two ago for it. state trooper. paid the fine and called it a day.

looking back and rereading that statute... it's all about interpretation in my opinion... but i'm no judge so i dunno how that goes really.

has anyone ever gotten anywhere writing a letter asking for a pardon?

That doesn't mean much if you just paid the fine. A trooper can write a ticket for just about anything and if you just pay the fine it doesn't matter what the law says. Of course, if the fine is less than the hassle of getting justice, you're screwed both ways.

Why can't they just do it like every other state ( most of them anyhow ) and make a bumper height thing, that way you could use a 2" receiver front and rear for a "street" bumper, then pull the pins and endless ramp clearance?....i guess that would be TOO easy...LOL!

Thats the advantages of living out in the country, as most could care less as long as you are responsible.

I have spoken with several Troopers, as my uncle is one, and they have all told me that they wouldn't stop a vehicle or write a ticket unless the vehicle was rediculous, showed signs that they couldn't drive the vehicle, or if they were stupid/acted like an asshole during a stop or accident.

How would they know the frame height of a stock vehicle anyway? I've never been hassled about it in my eb that is far higher than stock nor has my roommate that has a dmax that's ~16" over stock. We've actually both been complemented by the police on them. I can't imagine it ever being a problem unless you're doing something to give them a reason to ticket you--or you have an axle sticking out of either end of the body/tires with no body covering them at all.

Where they get you alot of times is the fact that you were supposed to be 42" from the center of the headlight to the ground for inspection reasons. I had a buddy of mine who got 5 lift tickets and each were thrown out until on the last one he opened his mouth about them throwing the last 4 out. It really all depends on the officer. I got pulled twice in my yota on 38's but it was off of a main road and the officers wanted to ask me a few questions about the rig

To really enforce the law the LEO's would have to have access to a file or book with every vehicle ever made listing the stock height of those vehicles. It would also have to list the variations within the same model. Like a Wrangler Rubicon sets a couple of inches than a base model Wrangler. Countless other vehicles have height variations in the same model also. Stock ride heights are all over the place. What standard would one use?

What LEO has access to all of this information?

the reciever hitch bumper is how the ppl in NJ get around that.. They strictly inforce lift laws up there.. along with mud flap/tire stick out laws and many more..

yeah the 6" over stock crap is tough to enforce. Go to a new car dealer and look down a row of 10 identically equipped trucks and you will often have 3-4" of variation...

I go a lift law ticket in Wilmington years ago.

But that was with 16" of lift and 44's and like 10 people hanging on the side of the bed...back in my young stupid show trucks days...I look back and ashamed of the $600 worth of chrome shocks and orange neons....
Young, Dumb, and the chicks at the beach dug it....
I deserved a ticket....

Of course this was before 49"s were available.
So 44s it was
But it was a poser dream.
Chrome shocks (3 each wheel front AND rear)
Chrome side pipes, no mufflers just 454->side pipes
Speaker box covered the back cargo area of the Blazer.
Rebel Flag airbrushed on the tail gate with the words the south HAS risen (added by owner before me)
Chrome bumpers.
And great big chrome lift springs (even chromed the back side of the blocks in the rear)
Of course it was sporting bullet proof 10 bolts...:shaking:
5% Limo tent blah blah blah

Care to guess what the custom license plate was?

How is it that whatever the issue, a cop shows up to tell you that "Yes, it IS illegal. I will ticket you for it. And any questioning of its legality is just 'nit picking'."

Oh, and "trust me" is right up there with "You understand your rights? Ok, now just tell me exactly what happened so we can work this thing out."

Protect and serve. You guys rock. Just precious. God Bless America. And High Life. Rock'awn!

aight yall must have anal cops around yall if you are gettin in trouble. i have a trooper friend that put 6" of lift on his super duty and 37" tires, and according to that law that would be more than 6" over stock. this is his dd. one of my buddies from home that goes to ecu has a 1994 z71 on about 15" of lift and 44" boggers. he has been pulled and given tickets, but for speeding, not the amount of lift. i was pulled by a cary cop and he even asked me about my lift and tires. after i explained to him that i had just put it on(the total was 6" plus the tires) he told me that that was probably the reason for my speed being off and let me go cus he had the same problem with his tj. i know down in myrtle beach they will right you a ticket for anything. a 54 is supposedly dot approved in NC and my buddy with the z71 is supposedly getting some duece and a halfs and 54" boggers. i see tons of people driving down the road in raleigh that have more than 6" and they have not had any problems. i mean shit, if ricky can drive his piece around on 40's when he had them and not get pulled, then anyone can do the same

Skyhik5??@%?
DING DING DING....
And my a$$hole friends wont let me live it down...
My last Tellico trip, after some late night drinks I awoke to see Skyhik5 in fire soot on my tailgate:shaking:
