I talked with Theresa Stevens on the phone this morning and just got her fallow up e-mail. Here is the information:

Meet up time: 9am at the Hunt Camp
Trail of Focus: Falls Dam
Work/Repair Focus: Block off around a Mud Hole with Guard Railing, Remove Hog Wire Fencing
Primary Tools Needed: Walk behind or tow behind auger with a 9 inch bit, ratchet and wrench sets for 1 1/2 inch bolts, rock bars with tamping end, shovels, post hole diggers.
Camping Arrangements: For those that would like to come in Friday and camp over night, work Saturday, and then leave Sunday there will be free camping. Either contact Janet or just let me know and I will.

Now this is the preliminary information she has given me. Depending on how big of a turn out we can get together we may possibly then have time for other trail repairs. We knock out the repairs that the FS has planned and then there would be a possibility of us being able to work on repairs that we suggest/get approved. I haven't talked to her about any other possible repairs on the trail, but I would like to see what kind of group we are going to have first. If we can confirm a good sized group then I will talk to her about some ideas that have been discussed etc.

I will need a vehicle count of how many trucks to expect so she can get day/trail passes. I am going to look around at equipment rental places to see how much an auger rental will set us back. Maybe if someone has an auger or maybe a Bobcat (Skidsteer Loader) with an auger attachment that would be cool also. I see the benefit of having the skidsteer there so we could have not only use the auger but fill in/grade etc with the bucket also if needed. Besides equipment another thing to consider is lunch/food/drinks. If anyone has any ideas in the field feel free to post them.

So who is all is ready for some trail work on the 27th?

might be able plus a few buddies got to check the calender to see what i got going on

You have got to learn now that you can tell her no every once in a while.

I have to check a few things first before I commit 100%, got to see whats going on with my kids that weekend.

The CFSJC should be there that weekend working on our trail, Dickey Bell.

There will be a couple clubs out that weekend working on their trails. The original discussion was about helping CROC work on Rocky Mnt. Loop but then she remembered that Falls Dam was behind on work. So right now according to Theresa the group we get together on here will be focused on Falls Dam. But you never know, if we get a large enough group going we may be able to help out clubs on other trails also if they want. It all depends on how many people we get together for this, and of course what Theresa and the FS decides.

We have a lot of details to work out though, one of the biggest one being equipment. From there lunch/food and other stuff has to be taken care of also. This will really be a group effort to make this a successful NC4X4 Trail Work day. And who knows if it goes well we can work with Theresa to make this a regular deal.

If anyone has questions etc please post them or send me a PM. And if you have attended past work days and have any ideas/suggestions/input please feel free. :driver:

They have always provided us with the equipment. But if they have multiple clubs then I can see where it would get sparse. Last year we put up some guardrails on Dickey Bell, and they had an auger, hand tools and some machinery. Did she say for sure we would be short on equipment or?

That is the impression I got from Terry, here is what she said in the e-mail:

....We would like you to bring up either a walk behind or tow behind auger with a 9 inch bit. .... Also, bring ratchet and wrench sets for 1 1/2 inch bolts, rock bars with tamping end, shovels, post hole diggers. We'll have a mix of these tools too but we have 2 other clubs coming up to work that weekend so if you could bring some of these too we'll have enough to go around...

I have been checking around on auger prices and other equipment including skid steer loaders. The auger attachment for a skid loader will be the same price as renting the others, so that is an option if we can arrange to get a New Holland or a Bobcat up there. I can tell you from personal experience a skid loader with an auger goes a LOT faster than the 2 man augers. And that is one less person it takes to get that job done. If no one has a Bobcat we can use hopefully we can find some place that doesn't charge $200 a day.

Ooooops, our bad :)

CTB rented a walk behind auger for our workday last weekend, guess the FS found it to be MUCH more useful that the "man slingers" they provide :)

CTB paid $106 for the rental.

idk who you have checked with but maybe try some of the smaller companies. like phoenix on 74E Indiantrail, there's one in Waxhaw, there's a place here in pageland that rents equipment. etc. places like sunbelt are usually the highest but the others usually aren't much cheaper.

Back in the day when the family construction company was around we rented from Phoenix Quality Rentals on 74 (that you mentioned) all the time, we also rented from Tarheel Rentals that is no longer around to my knowledge. A skid steer loader rental used to be $150 a day at most. For the price of a week rental now days you could probably buy an old Bobcat 743. So far the best I have found online is $175 for a day. I will keep looking though. A termite, dingo, or just a walk behind Auger could work too. Worst case scenario we end up with a 2 man auger, which are fairly easy to get/cheap.

I think I can make it there. I'll call around my area and find out about the skidsteers with auger as well. I'll confirm later this week.

Be sure to take roll and have everyone sign their names on the roll if they are getting the trail passes. Janet had us do this last year at the cleanup. She would prefer they sign in person at her camper. Helps keep track of man hours as well.

I'd like to help but cant make it that weekend. Will be up in NJ or down in FL doing one of the charity runs for a friend/jeeper that lost his leg in an accident. Will you guys be doing trail maintenance throughout the year? I've only been in NC just over a year, not sure how it works.

I plan to organize an NC Trail Cleanup Day event again this year. Last year the nc4x4.com community cleaned trash from URE and Brown mountain. I plan to do two cleanup days each year. No dates have been set yet, but look for something in the June to July time frame and then around URE season close. It will be posted in the upcoming events.

I'm gonna plan to be there but my calendar is getting really tight :(

This workday will be supervised by FS personnel I'm sure. They will have sign up sheets.

Right now Ranger Walker is planning to have the 3rd Saturday of each month, May thru October, as a general Forest Service workday. We'll keep you posted :)

JC is right about the sign up sheets. Theresa said there would be sign up forums available during the 9am meet up at Hunt Camp.

The head count so far is looking to be 5 people. Hopefully by the time the workday rolls around we will have at least 10. I will be sending Theresa an update e-mail tonight after work with a current head count etc.

Still looking around at prices on skidloaders w/ augers etc. And trying to drum up ideas for lunch/food/drinks. If anyone has any ideas feel free to post them up.

I wouldn't make a production out of lunch. I heard that it took too much time away from the chores at hand, although CNC did a masterful job of putting on the feed :) Everybody bring what they want and be done with it, leave more time to actually work.

what mud hole is getting blocked off?

My mistake. I re-worded my initial post, because after reading her e-mail another time it sounds like it is to block off atv-dirt bikers from bypassing the mud hole (versus blocking the mud hole itself) and driving off the trail. The way it is worded is a little vague and she doesn't mention which one in particular. I am sure we will find out on the workday. Always remember nothing planned for the trails is set in stone until its actually done.

i'm in

yo count me in fo sho! hopefully my jeep will be finished by then. whatever my jeep status is, i will be there :driver:

already got it on my calender:bounce2:
