ND iroks for towing???

Why?
You are taking a good mud tire and asking it to do something it was never designed to do?
If you really want. I bet Ricky would sell you his Z71...

Find a decent AT and run it.

um what? I guess that BFG mud terrains werent designed with street riding in mind as well either huh? I guess that SS made this tire NON-directional so it would do better offroad, correct? And what does ricky and his z71 have to do with anything.

If you can find me a NAME BRAND AT tire in a load E that doesnt look like a road tire for $116 a peice new, by all means, send me the link

Big Rick wouldn't sell the mighty Z71 for all of King Midas's Silver :flipoff2:

Chad I think it'd be strait to run those tires, I am always of the mind that you need a somewhat agressive tire on your tow rig cause sometimes the tow rig has to serve recovery purposes for you main rig, plus the fact that I've almost gotten stuck in a field once while trying to tow my jeep out cause my At's weren't grabbing. Thats why I like the H1's there like the perfect tow rig tire IMO, but since your not wanting to go up in size those Irok's aughta be fine . . .

Its gonna be tough to find an aggressive, properly load rated tire in that size. I can help you with that IROKnd tire for about $100 per tire. Definately cheaper than NTW.

Let me know if i can help you out any further.

Do what you want. You posted here looking for opinions.
My opinion is, for a tow rig, get tow rig tires.
I don't understand buying a tire that you admit will only last around 20k just to have the look you want. Also mud tires, for the most part, suck on wet roads and ice. Not that you would ever tow if it is raining.:shaking:
Its your truck. You are already asking it to do something it really wasn't designed to do (making a 1/2 ton into a 3/4 ton). If you are doing it for the look, that is one thing. But if you are looking for a tire that will perform well in a big variety of situations, something closer to an A/T would serve better.
Your opinion may and does differ.
Here is one from Wal-mart.

I guess you don't know to much about the j trucks. He's put leafs, axles, d-shafts and t-case out of a j-20. His j-10 IS a J-20 now.

Actually, I know quite a bit about J-trucks.
He has swapped many of the parts, but, are the braking systems different? Are the frames different? Etc...

My point was mainly about asking a tire primarily designed for off road use to do a job better suited for a more street friendly tire.
Will he run off the road the first time he tows with it with the Iroks, careening into a busload of nuns and orphans? Probably not. But a somewhat more street oriented tire will do better on the road, where 99% of towing takes place.

If it's a load range E tire, it will be safe to tow with...

I think they'd look badass, but your primary factor seems to be cost. A tire that's $200 and lasts 30,000 miles is a better deal than a $100 tire that lasts 15,000.. Just my $.02

Agreed. I will only drive it when I tow. From what I read it is a load E tire. I completely understand about the MT/AT arguement and I agree with what has been said. I am just looking for the best deal in a load E tire. And as far as the j truck goes, everyone I have talked to said it would do fine. I agree that it is a half ton but a very heavy one!!! Im towing nothing more than a toyota and a 16t ft trailer with brakes on both axles. I know its not the best tow rig but I am in college at 28 and paying for things on my own. Right now, it is the best I can do. I believe with the completely rebuilt axles, brakes and suspension upgrades it should tow fine...If the brakes are an issue, I can save for a hyrdoboost system. As far as the frames go, its the exact frame that was put under the j20

BTW I would not have the Wally world Liberators pictured above.

4-5 years ago my BIL purchased a set on a Saturday morning, and we left out headed for Martinsville, VA to watch the race the next day. Between York and Charlotte we had a blow out on 77. Fun stuff, anyway a dismount and cab fair (no spare, brilliant) to a Wal Mart in Charlotte and a few hours later we were on our way again. Well tire 2 blew on 85 just south of Concord. An argument ensued Wally refused to replace the other two tires, so nervously we headed out. When tire 5 (the one purchased at a different store) blew in Greensboro, it was towed to a Sears and a set of Michelins installed.

Im sure plenty have had great success with them and we got the only 3 bad ones in the world, put I wouldnt take a free set at this point.

There have been lots of reports of bad ones, but that wasa year or two ago. They were redesigned about a year ago when Uniroyal put their name on it. It used to just be called a Liberator. FWIW, they run 75 with no shake at all ( on a 25 year old tow rig)
I agree a J10/20 can make a good tow rig. I hope the Iroks work well. i agree they will look great.

I hope it will as well since its the best I have. I will continue to look but for now, with the mileage that I will be using this truck, these tires are looking pretty good!!!

i roks

it may only be your tow rig and i have been stuck in a field and on a incline with a set of cooper atr more than once and they only get about 30,000 miles a set with proper main. so i know that you can do well to go with the iroks .and if they dont work out you dont have a lot of cash in them if you want to change to another tire . so good luck

Also, I was going to mention, if your stock size was a 235/85/16, you can go to a 265/75/16 and stay within .2% of the same diameter. It will get you about 2 inches in width though.
That is what I put on mine, with the Wally world tires above, for $110 each (that size is more common i.e. cheaper)
