So I need to replace my starter. Before I go get an OE replacement, is there any brand or upgrade I should consider? This is for my 98 TJ that gets wheeled (and started a lot on the trail).

Rock auto, OEM, leave the one you have now in the truck as a spare.

I buy some of the lifetime warranty ones from parts store. They replaced one that had been submerged several times. Never know when they go bad but there is usually an Autozone nearby. I did learn to bench test if possible. I had a replacement not work after I changed it in the driveway in the rain

Buy a junkyard core, and get it rebuilt by a good auto electrical/motor shop (I use Carolina Auto Electric in Charlotte). I trust that exponentially more than any parts store commodity rebuild/reman/aftermarket. Some of the remans that RockAuto carries (ACDelco reman, for example) are decent, but I've still got in the habit of buying two and sending one back, as an extra factor of safety for most reman stuff. I'd rather hand it to a guy who stands behind his work and bench tests everything before it goes out the door, and know that it fits because it's your original part with new bearings and new electrical parts.

Good quality aftermarket is the other option, besides new OEM. Those are obviously the expensive options.

Good folks! They just refreshed mine, & let me know it wasn't the starter that was bad. I changed battery's, & problem solved. I've used Carolina for years, formerly Larry's!
