Need guidance from those who have taken the S.A.T. - preferrably recent.

So it's been 20 or so years since I took the A.C.T. (I wasn't required to take the S.A.T - so I didn't). My step-daughter just took it this morning and I'm trying to find out if she is BSing me or not. At this point, it's moot - but I still don't trust what she is saying.

First off, a little background. She isn't a very honest person to begin with, but she decided that she wanted to take the SAT even though she really doesn't have the grades to get into college. She claims to have finaggled a way to get the school system to pay for the test (because my wife and I refused to pay for it since she hadn't given a rat's ass about her grades up to this point).

Then, with NO preparation upfront, she claims the test was "easy" and she "only had to take the math part". From what I remember of the ACT, you took the whole test no matter what. She wasn't grounded today (as she usually is), so she didn't need an excuse to get out of the house, but I don't really know what to think.

Anyone take the SAT recently that can shed a little light on this? Like I said, I'm not too concerned since even if she tanks on the test, I had no money invested in it. It would have just been a waste of a morning for her if she did.

She only had to take the math part if thats the only part she decided to take..

IE, if she didnt want to take the English Comprehensive part, she just didnt write down the answers.

Theres also a writing test on the new ones as well...did she mention that?

it is easy if you only answer three Q's

I took the test without a caclutar (mine was not allowed) and it kicked my ass. I think I got like a 400 without the cac.....ouch

i got a perfect score on the english side of the SAT. i only got a 1060 total though, lol, my math skills suck!

taking the test is easy, getting the answers right is the hard part. something tells me her score isnt going to be very high.

You can now elect to take only one section and you can get a score report for your best combined.

A year or so back I was looking in going back to school.
When I took the SAT originally I had a 750 on Math but only a 600 on English, I went and just took the English.
But I signed up for it that way.

BTW there are need based grants (at least there were 12 years ago, because I was going to turn down my scholly because I couldnt afford the $150 to take the SAT and the guidance counselor got it granted) that covber the cost of teh SAT

I have taken the SAT and ACT within the past year and for the SAT you add your scores for the 3 sections to get your score. If your daughter only took the math part and thinks she did well. She is lying to you. The highest score you can get on the SAT is a 2400. One section is only worth 800 points. You technically dont have to do all the sections in the test because points are not deducted if you leave a question blank. So she could have done the math and then not done anything else.

The ACT im not to familiar with but i believe it scores out of 36 points. It is set up similar to the SAT.

www.collegeboard.com can answer many questions about these tests.

Lies or not, way to be supportive!

I wholeheartedly agree. I should be and would be more supportive if things were different. She hasn't given a second thought to anything with regards to her grades to this point.

Now, having understood the situation a little better, can take her at her word at least in this moment.

A calculator for the SATS? In my day they did not allow any calculators on the SAT - umm - well handheld calculators might not even have been available...

Some parts pof the SAT, calculators are allowed. But like all tools, unless you know what you are doing, they do not help.
It may be a bit of late inspiration, but better late than never.
I did not take the SATs until near the end of my freshman year in college> ROTC needed and SAT score. Then I found out the article 15 I got in the USAF (wasn't ready for college yet) for smoking pot blocked me from ROTC. I turned 25 my freshman year. Better late than never.
So if your step-daughter is showing genuine interest in college, encourage her. If she is a little loose with the truth, don't let her get away with it. Better that she learn now.
Best of luck to you and helping your step-daughter find her path.
My kids are 12 and 13. I figure as long as I don;t make the same mistakes my own father made, they will turn out okay.
