my gf just called me while i am in germany she said the jeep just died on her while driveing i mean it just totally shut off , my mom was with her , well what yall think it would be it is a 1987 jeep cherokee with 190K in it let me know thanks

what was it doing? Any info from the last few days (running funny, starting ok & got gas?)?

it ran all day she drove all day well she was gonig down 421, it just shut off was doing good she said and it just shut off , well she let it sit for a good 30 min and it started up and she thought low on gad so filed it up and it did it again 5 min later any ideas

What about the second time? Sit for 30 minutes then start? Sounds like something getting hot causing it to shut down. Maybe

they were leaveing cvs and reversed and went frword 2 ft and died again , yea it sat on side rode for 30 min and then started right up and it full of coolent

I think electric not engine. I sounds like 30 minutes is enough time for something to cool down. Did it start happening after dark(when you would have to use headlights)?

no headlight it was today it at the cvs in clemmons im on a flight home now

I had a mustang that the computer went out on but it just wouldn't start back ran fine up to getting out at the gas station. Is it the cvs close to advance auto? You could get them to run a diagnosises test while it won't start. Maybe a relay or something in the ignition system.

my gf just got it home via a towtruck yay 200$ tow truck for 3 miles lol but anyways i am in ft bragg. now driveing home in morning but i called the guy we bought it from he put a used crack sensor on it 6 mouths ago. so i am going to replace that . but any other ideas keep them comeing sooner or later it will work lol oh yea the fuel filter too , just for the hell autozones going to love me lol

don't waste your money just throwin random parts at it!

a used crank wouldn't be the culprit here...I agree with mmcj7 that it sounds like something is overheating.

Is it the 4.0L? Check over all ignition parts/wires. Maybe see if Advnace can check your ignition coil (sometimes those get sporadic when hot)

Throwing my vote for the fuel pump into the mix... a given "wear item" *AND* will give the same "it just cut off" symptom.

Let us know what you find!

but would that cause the "wait awhile and it restarts" behavior?

You aid it has coolant, but it could still be overheating, that would explain this behavior. I had a 90 XJ that had a bad/clogged heater core, it preventedt he coolant from flowing well and it would overheat and shut off. IIRC if the temp sensor isn't propoerly submersed in fluid, iy will give an erroneous reading too.

Here is how I would go about checking this .

1.Check all the grounds .
2.When vehicle cuts off check for fuel and spark.

Now there is a TSB for a patch harness for the crank sensor.
The common problems I found were Bad grounds,Fuel pump resistor ,and crank sensor .

i work at advance auto and i have seen multiple vehicles do that and replacing either crank or camshaft position sensors fixed it. Im not exactly sure on how but basicly what was already said is true. It heats up, shuts off, then after it cools will work again. Especially since it was replaced not too long ago, I would try that. Often aftermarket parts from us and the zone give out. Inferior quality. But i would check if it is throwing any codes. It might have the code for either of those sensors.

ok replaced the cps and nothnig still no spark what yall think next , it is geting all other lights bells and everything well if any one lives near clemmons let me know i will show u i dont go in tell 12 tomorrow

and it isnt heating it been off sense yesterday around 4 and still not cranking i will take video in moment

Have you checked for fuel and spark? Have you checked grounds and electric plugs?

check your spark. may be that the dist. cap came loose or is cracked and that will keep it from running.

and, when you turn the key on, listen and see if you can hear the fuel pump turn on. have someone do this for you if you cant hear it from the inside by taking the gas cap off and putting your ear close to the filler neck. you should hear a humm for about a second then it quits.

if one or both arent working that will make finding the problem easier to identify.

got it running lol 5 min new coil lol sorry yall lol but i have to take off the new cps and return it and put old one back on
