I have a 98 TJ i was out friday and stuff stopped working...all the gauges read nothing, but the gauge lights work. the radio and interior light stoped, The mileage does not show either, i have checked all fuses including under the hood. the radio wire harness has power to the connector. interior light bulb is good, any help or suggestions would be great!

Im having the same problem with my 97 XJ, havent found a solution, though haven't really looked. Let me know if u find one.

Check the ground, if thats not it sometimes the plug into the back of the cluster gets loose.

the only ground i have found is on the firewall took it off and re tighten... nothing

I will try to check the grounds this weekend, I actually removed the cluster, everything seemed fine back there surprisingly.

sounds like the body control module has went bad as all chryslers are bad for computer issues! The BCM controls all those things you are talking about that you have lost and if the fuses are good like you said, you need to get a wiring diagram of the bcm and check to see if it has power coming into it from the fuse and then check to see if it has power coming out of it to the things you have lost. If not, you have a bad BCM. Good luck!

I didn't think TJs had BCMs, There is a PCM

Try this

Here's the scoop on the guages problem I was having on my '98 TJ

Problem: While driving the Speedo and Tach would go dead and the airbag
light would come on. The shift light would aslo stop working.

Temporary Solution: One good solid wack on top of the instrument panel
would temporarily fix the problem.

Permanent Solution: This is much easier than I ever imagined. I fixed
the problem myself in about 45 minutes. I could have done it in 10
minutes if I had already known how to take the dash apart.

Heres the basic jest of the solution. The instrument cluster is a module
that plugs into the dash/frame. When removed, the instrument cluster
pulls right out, there is no wiring hanging off the back or anything.
There are connectors built into the back of the instrument cluster, the
other half of the connectors are built onto the frame that the
instrument cluster plugs into. This is the connection that is causing
the problem.

Once the instrument cluster is removed, you can see the small silver
blade type connectors protruding from the rear of the instrument cluster
in 2 different groups, one on the left and one on the right. All you
have to do to fix the connection problem is this. Take a small pair of
needle-node pliers, grab the end of each one of the silver blade type
connector and give it a 10-15 degree twist in one direction. This will
bend the connector enough to make a solid connection once the unit is
put back together. Be careful not to twist it too much so it doesnt
break and/or not go back together. Do this to all of the connectors,
there are about 20 or so. It works great, I havent had a problem with it
since.

Calvin,

Its the wire that goes up the roll bar behind the driver seat to the sound bar.

read this

Hey dude this just happened to me a month ago check the wire that runs up to the speakers on your rollbars i pinched mine on accident. And i got in my jeep and started driving and nothing worked(Radio, guages, Dome light) just check that cluster of wires that runs up to the rollbar speakers.

If that don't work try this again:

One good solid wack on top of the instrument panel
would temporarily fix the problem.

i think i wacked it out!!! time to fix it! i have had a lot of usefull info from everyone i will trace the sound bar to the dash tonight and see what i can find

have not found time for the jeep this weekend but if anyone notices something that has not been covered feel free to chime in with suggestions i will take all the advise i have been given and try them till something fixes my prob cant afford a professional to work on it

okay so the gauge issue is fixed... not sure exacly what fixed it, touched 2 hot wires together made them smoke popped 2 fuses replaced the fuses and everything started working... can fuses go bad without actualy blowing?

I helped him with this,

I think it was in the plug that I unplugged after the fuse popped, I unplugged the plug going to the key switch to allow me some move length on the wires to get them taped up, and when I plugged it back in, it may have not had a good connection, Which would explain why hitting the top of the dash would cause it to work again as a temp fix.
