Alright jeep guys, I have a friend that called me today about his 2000 TJ. He was driving down the road and stopped at a light. When the light turned green he pushed in the clutch and the tranny would not go into any gear. He said that it doesn't grind like it would if you don't have the clutch disengaged. Also said it won't go in gear if you roll it a little while holding it in gear. He said the clutch seems to be engaging / disengaging. He has not had any problems with the jeep to date.

A friend and myself are planning to go over tomorrow afternoon to check it out. Aside from the obvious: clutch, shift linkage, etc. anybody had this problem or have any suggestions as to what it may be?

Yo,
Possibly the shifter bushing has failed. Many have a plastic bushing that cracks. Should be easy enough to pull the boot and then pull the shifter out of top of transmission. Call dealer parts department and see if they offer a replacement meaning there is a busing at the end of the shifter.

If it ain't that, read on....

The clutch may not be disengaging. Why, likely bad clutch master or slave cylinder if its hydraulic (look for leaking) or a failed pressure plate. Is there any abnormal slack in the clutch pedal freeplay? Should be about 1/2-1 inch range. Given its age, any of the above is possible. Start with the easy to check first and drill down to the more difficult stuff which will be the pressure plate/clutch.

My $0.02

Thanks. I didn't know about the shifter bushing. I know samurais are prone to the same problem. I had planned on checking the slave cylinder, due to past experience. I appreciate your $0.02.

I appreciate the advice. He checked the slave cylinder and clutch and everything appears to be OK. Fluid is fine. He pulled the shifter and the bushing on the end of the shifter is in good shape. The damn thing just won't move out of neutral. You can't even get it to try to go into gear. it won't grind or anything. Anybody got any other ideas?

On the shift rails, there are some keys that line up when the shifter is moved a specific place. They are held on by spring pins, so possibly he sheared one of the pins and everything is messed up.
