Yea I mentioned this b4 on how to run 220 to you're garage, and after talking to some people I think it would be way more cost effecient to do it ourselfs rather than have an electritain run it for us. Anyway we would like to do it this coming weekend (4th-6th) and if anybody near Mooresville, NC has done it before we would like some help, and my dad would give you some cash for helpin us. Let me know asap if anybody can help.
Thanks,
Ricky

i think your concern should be for safety rather than cost. electricity is nothing to play with, especially 240v of it. if you can't find someone who knows what they're doing to lend a hand, i would highly reccomend hiring a professional if you're not confident in doing it yourself.

What do you want the 220 circuit for? And how old is the service in your house?

If it's just for a small welder or something like that, you can run your own in the garage with some 12-3 romex, a 250v/20a recept, a 2 pole 20a breaker, pop in wall box, and a cover. Cut a hole in the wall just below your panel and slap the box in there.

Just throw the main breaker in your panel before you go tying in the wires and you won't get fried.

It's very simple to run one circuit. However, if you are at all unsure... PAY THE MONEY and have a licensed electrician do it. Shouldn't take more than an hour for them to add in an additional circuit---unless you need something really specific and/or custom.

Well the fusebox is waaay on the other side of the house from the garage so after talking to some people that have done this before, what we were gonna do was run a spliter box off of the range since its on the other side of the garage wall and just run it through an already exisiting hole out to the garage and put a plug out there. But my dad would just prefer I had somebody who's done it before come help.

Anybody? We really want to get this done this weekend because it's probably the last weekend I will be coming home untill thanksgiving break, and I need to know asap so we can all cooridinate when we can do it. If anybody can help that'd be great, and like I said we'll give you some cash

Well we had a guy give us a quote and he said it would cost $500, thats ridiculous.
Is it? I've never done electrical work for pay, so I wouldn't know about prices, but seems to me, if you can't do it yourself, you have to pay someone who can. I would call 4 or 5 electricians and get more quotes.

$500 is not bad it cost me around $250 to make a 30ft 220v extention cord for my welder compressor.

Well, Like I said, I can do it, I know what to do . . . my dad just doesn't want me messin with his houses electricity without someone who has done it before, cause he doesn't want me getting hurt or screwing up the electricity in his house.

So basically It would be awsome if someone could just come basically to lend a hand and tell me if I'm doing something wrong is all you'd have to do. I'm not asking someone to do all the work. The house is like right off exit 33 from I77 so if anybody could come lend a hand that be awsome!!!

You don't know what to do. From the statements you have made in this thread, it's apparent that you're unfamiliar with basic electrical safety, and have made no effort to verify that your plans meet code.

Hire an electrician.

Well what I did was talk to some people and they said they did it this way and told me what to do. Cut the main power in the box then go under the house run a splitter box of the range power supply and send the wire out through an existing hole in the garage wall and mount a plug box on the wall of the garage.

Like I said this is from people who've done that very thing before so I know what to do, just like I said never have done it b4. That's why my dad would like me to get someone to help, and why im asking for soemone to basically just tell me weather im doing it wrong while im doing it.

Yeah, you definitely need an electrician.

Ricky, that is what folks are trying to tell you, if you don't know what is wrong with this set up, you need to hire an electrician. Your buddy goes to sell that house, and a home inspector sees that, he'll have to rip it completly out. It doesn't pass code. Their is a difference in "it works" and "it passes code" I'm assuming no ones coming to your help, because, like me, their pretty busy on their own projects, and also do not want to accept the liability. An electrician has insurance for the liability and know's the codes. And you don't play games with electricity.

I'm not trying to be ignorant or anything, and I understand what you're saying. But its my dads house were doin this in, and he's not planning on selling it anytime soon. Plus my dad doesn't really mind if it doesn't pass code like you said we can just take it out if he ever decides to sell down the road.

I just talked to my dad on the cell and he says were just gonna me and him try and do it fri afternoon/evening, but he still would prefer if someone came to help out.

Well, if you burn down the house on Thanksgiving weekend, know in advance that the insurance company doesn't have to pay.

Hire an electrician. You don't know WTF you're doing.

RANGES MUST BE ON DEDICATED CIRCUITS. THAT MEANS NO OTHER RECEPTACLES OR HARD-WIRED APPLIANCES ON THE SAME CIRCUIT.

What you're doing is dangerous and does not meet building codes. Do you even know what the conductor or box requirements will be required? Have you consulted with local inspectors to determine what their interpretation is regarding disconnects?

YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. HIRE AN ELECTRICIAN.
