So far I have adjusted the shift linkage and tightened the lever on top of the transmission. I have pics on jeepforum here.
What I have now is a problem with the gears engaging at lower RPM (or staying engaged) until the fluid warms up. Slight depression of the throttle seems to help which makes me think that the throttle valve cable to the trans. is still too loose. Fluid level is perfect.
Can someone confirm the loose cable theory? (or is the TV cable too tight, or is this something else like band adjustment)

on my tj auto i baught it with a new tranny in it (dont know who put it in) but i had a problem with it shifting to late. all i did was adjust the deturant cable (i think thats what its called) its under the hood attached to the throttle linkage and now its fine. just my .02

Adjusted it shorter or longer?
I've tried both directions without any noticeable change in symptom. I'm concerned about a large adjustment (say 1 cm) in either direction. I don't want to burn up a band or anything. My biggest question is going to be whether I adjust it shorter or longer.

The symptoms were eliminated. I shortened the cable another half of a cm and checked the fluid again after running hot for about 10 minutes. The level was at the bottom of the OK band. I probably should have done one of these at a time to know exactly which fixed the problem but nevertheless the problems are gone.

i have a prob with mine not down shifting into low untill you come to almost a complete stop, and you have to stand on it to get it to downshift into 2nd what would this prob be

sounds like a shift solonoid or it could be the pcm/bcm
because with the "learning" theydo over time they can do wierd things i heard of more then a few lincoln ls cars come in that wont go in to reverse with only 40k and its because the drivers used it only once or twice a month and the cars figured it wasnt needed but its probly nothing that advanced

1997-2002 TJ's have a hydraulic transmission the PCM has very little if any control over shift points. If the transmission is not shifting or delayed in shifting up or down there is a problem in the governor circuit which is still on the output shaft of the transmission just like old cars and trucks before electronic transmissions ever came out. There maybe dirt or debris from a clutch pack failing or a seal deteriorating hanging the governor valves up. I have fixed alot of shifting problems with the TH transmissions just by changing the fluid and filter and cleaning out the governor valves. The 30TH is used behind the 2.5L and the 31TH is used behind the 4.0L.

Kickdown cable adjustment is very important, as it will also cause late shifting and hard getting it back into first gear. If you have to get the pedal all the way to the floor to get it to downshift the cable is too long.

2003 and later TJ's have the 42RLE transmission which is 100% electronic controlled.

ok thanks the dodge place just changed the fliud and filter 1 month ago, i tried some lucas tranny stuff it helped a little i think
