I have a 86 cj7 that the PO hacked all the wires and pulled the AMC 150 I4. I want to rebuild the 4 banger . Is there a way to cut out all the wires and vacc. tubes on theses motors. I have the T5 and Dana 300 still in it and what to ride this year.

its not too clear what you are saying? are you saying the CJ has no motor. or the motor is there just not IN the CJ?
I think you are asking is there a way to keep the wires attached to the pulled motor...so that later you can re-attach them where they were cut later?

if thats the case, just use good tape and mark every single piece of wiring. it may be a pain but thats probably your best bet unless you buy a new wiring harness?

sorry, the motor is out and PO cut all wires at the firewall and motor. So can I get the motor running with out the cumputer and wires.

well i mean if you can figure out how to get the essentials wired up without everything else then sure try it.

why not just rebuild it then throw it in and hook everything up the right way?

I hate wiring and Its a wiring nightmare. All the wires are cutup and I don't know were to start. He started to put a 350 chevy in and has the motor mounts and the motor sitting there. I would need the th350 & Tcase, headers, carb and all the little things. I guess I'll sell the 4banger and go the 350 route. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like you need an engine bay wiring harness. then wire it up and do things the right way the first time instead of half assing it

Well

There's probably only a couple wire that you'd really need to get that thing running.

Oil pressure, temp, etc. you don't need.

Wiring??? It's all there right? Just match up the wires and get those splice connectors and a good crimp tool and have at it.

EDIT: Computer controlled carb? Does the nutter bypass apply to that?

I don't think so. Not sure on an 86, but the 84 150 used a Carter YFA not a Carter BBD like on the 258.

Milkman, I was in the same boat as you at one time on a Scrambler I was rebuilding. Here's all you need to do to get running. You need to find the switched power coming out of the firewall, crank or start wire from firewall (haynes or chilton's will show this), the stock coil, distributor, ignition module, starter solenoid and the resistor wire. If you can't find the resistor wire, I believe you can pick one up at AutoZone, Wells Ingition Products, pn F-799 (do not shorten the wire). The wiring diagram for hooking all of this stuff looks like this:

Another thing, when I was going through this, I was told to keep the wires (Orange & violet) from the distributor tightly twisted together, and run them along the block and sheet metal. I'm pretty sure it has to do with shielding the pusles from the dizzy to the module from any interference. I did just that and it ran like a champ.

FWIW, I took a jumbled mess of wires and did exactly as described in the diagram and ended up with a nice clean looking loom.
