I have just installed a newly rebuilt Carter BBD 2br on my 258. It is running allot better but after the jeep warms up about 20 min. it will start to sputter.
Any ideas???

sticking choke? is it running rich?

I dont think the chock is sticking the door / flap on top is closed when I start the jeep then it opens all the way up. Or do I have that backwards?

Mostly closed at start, but not all the way open at running temps. Maybe adjust it a bit. Try covering it with your hand restricting the air intake a bit and see if that helps any.

Shoot it. Burn it. Beat it with a hammer. Repeat.

Get fuel injection as soon as possible.

Ok, rant over. What year? I'll throw out prior issues on my 84.

Is the idle controller solenoid working properly?
Do you have any vacuum leaks?
You're sure the needles aren't clogged already (it's a BBD, see above rant)?
How does the exhaust smell?

I should have told everyone that I have a 1976 Cj7 with a 258 and a 1979 Intake and the carter bbd. I have also done all ne parts = tune-up, timing chain, coil, control box, disributor, water pump and new Advance Parts Carter BBD this past weekend. So all is new.

My .02, I went through 3 Advance BBD Carbs before I found one that ran like it was supposed to. The rebuilders they use don't bush the throttle shaft(commonly the only part that really wears out) like should be done, they just clean it and throw the new needle and seat is and call it good. IMHO I would take it back and get another one!

vacume to dist. in wrong spot ? fact that its runs good upto 20 min, points to a simple adjustment problem.

after 20min you shouldnt need choke at all (unless under load etc). Try this, hold the choke open with your finger then operate the throtle, it could be as simple as your fine when under choke/high idle and when that is disenguaged your base idle is to low etc..

Im not sure what adjustments you have, but a simple mixture adjustment might help. Get a vacume guage and at idle try to get the highes reading you can, then do the other side, (commonly 1.5 turns is a good start, if that base adjustment is off it will cause other problems with your carb by forcing you into your transition/off idle circuit which can lead to a hihger than needed idle adjustment to keep it running etc...

I do agree with the poor rebuild quaility, it should be easy enough to detect leaking throtle shaft, smear some grease down there and see if it helps any... :)

swap it for a mc2100. i did my swap for less than $50

really no reason to mess with that BBD

Thanks For All Of The Great Reply's I Will Be Looking At The Chock And Stuff Tonight One More Question What Is A Mc2100 And Where Do I Get One?
