Not sure if you guys will remember or not, but late last year some sorry sob decided they needed my tools more than I did. Money that was earmarked for parts had to be reallocated for tools and parts. Well that postponed my engine swap plans till now. Finally got the tools replaced and finished picking up the pieces/parts that I lacked to complete the swap.

ANYWAY

I am swapping all of my accessories, rebuilt head, manifolds, injection and computer from my 91 4.0 over to the new 04 long block and installing a new clutch. No problems with any of that. I need to install the distributor into the new engine. I have the service manuals for both years and all, but I am nervous about doing it. My good buddy that used to help me with this sort of thing up and moved to Tennessee. I figure this is a local board and maybe somebody might be willing to drive out and lend me a hand. Not looking for anyone to do it for me, just someone who has done it before to be a second set of eyes and hands. Willing to provide cold beverages, lunch/dinner and cash for fuel/time. I live 12 minutes off of I-40, from Hwy 42.

Details:
Old motor has been pulled and is stripped of all but distributor
New motor is completely intact
Work area is a concrete double carport, workbench and hoist

Give me a shout if you can help. :driver:

to let me understand this, you just need help plopping the distributor in? I can help ya but where on earth is willow springs?

Just so you can get going:
pull spark plugs(makes easier to spin crank)
have friend hold finger over #1 plug hole
spin crank till pressure builds and blows finger off hole(crank balancer should be at TDC). That is your TDC of compression stroke.
Mark the cap where #1 plug wire is - set cap on distributor, mark the distributor base where the #1 wire would be. Take cap off(leave rotor on).
Now, heres the little bit of intricity.
Drop distributor down in. The final result is to get the rotor to point to the #1 marking on the base you made(chances are it wont first time go). If it does not align, pull the distributor, then you need to shove a flat head screw driver down the distributor hole and spin the oil pump gear.
Repeat last step until distributor goes in and rotor points to the #1 base marking
Then hookup all junk and fine tune with a timing light

Both engines are out of the vehicle. I am pulling everything (head, injection, intake, exhaust, water pump, distributor, power steering pump and alternator) from my 1991 4.0 and adding it to a new 2004 take-out long block. Already had the head redone. This weekend I got everything pulled off the new engine, painted the block and head, stripped all the crap off the intake and am dropping it off at Loop Road today to get it cleaned. Had to drill/tap one hole for the older water pump to fit. The newer engine was distributorless. I am moving the distributor from the old engine into the newer one. I have been holding off on pulling it out of the old block, as I am really not sure of the "right way" to install it in the new block. I was pretty sure the timing is not supposed to be adjustable on the 4.0L.

I live about 12 minutes off exit 312 on I-40 E :driver:

Regards,

Kevin
