My 1988 Comanche wont go into park, neutral, or reverse.

I was drivin it in the field in front of my house....i put on the e brake before it stoped so it slid of course....when it stoped i left the e brake on and put it in park....when i got back in it to drive i still had the e brake on so i couldnt tell that it wasnt in park....when i tried to start it ... it wouldnt do anything....i thought that was weird cause it hadnt ever done that before.... so i tried it again and still nothing.... so then i released the e brake and it started rolling... i was like what in the heck....i mashed the brake pedal and moved it from park to drive then back to park and it still rolled and still wouldnt start( i does not roll in 1-2, 3, or D)....then i put it in neutral and it cranked...i drove it about 100 yards and stopped to see if it would go in park... well i put it in and it in and let off the brake pedal and it started rolling..... it wont go in park, reverse, or neutral...... and it wont even crank now.....when i move the column shift to thise gears its like there are no gears there.... but it will go in 1-2, 3, and D..... i cant get it to crank....Please help.... it is just sittin in the field.

thanx alot

I tend to think it's linkage related... not sure how the linkage in an MJ is run, BUT... my Commando has a column shifter. It spins a tube inside the column w/ a tab welded to the firewall side>That in turn moves a rod that connects to a funky linkage mounted to the frame> which moves the selector on the tranny. If out of adjustment, it'll skip gears just like you've described. Last time I had it apart for a little "tightening" (who'd have thunk the tiny bushings would've worn out after only 30 years underneath the filth? :D ), it took multiple tries to find *the* spot (increasing/decreasing the rod length) where all gears worked... where the indicator on the column said they should be

While I have no idea *how* or *why* your linkage could've boogered in a field, that where I'd look first...

Is it possible that the linkage came apart somehow? Mine has a nylon bushing it pushes into and has come out a time or two- But that;s on a CJ7

thanx for the help...i will check that.....ill post what i see on it :driver:

I had a manual on the column in my chevy and I was driving down the road one day and went to shift to a gear and the bushings somewhere gave way. Needless to say I barely made it home, i had to sit in a parking lot and figure out how to get it into some gear. I got it into second and limped home. I then moved the shifter to the floor because I really didn't want to fool with thrying to figure out what in the linkage had broken. I don't know how you might be able to do it with the auto but you might try moving it to the floor. This idea might get you more headaches though. At least it happened in a field. :)

Yeah....i am glad it didnt do it on the road. LoL :smokin:

thanx for the help...it was the linkage on the firewall....it had broken
