I thought that until I drove my mom's 02 Avvy for a week. They are much more useful than you think. Drop the midgate and pull off the tonneau and there is plenty of room for a ATV or a dirtbike. There is just as much room between the fenders as there is between the fenders of a full size truck. You can load a 4x8 sheet of plywood easily, and the bed itself is only slightly shorter than a standard short bed, and is between a shortbed and a long bed with the midgate down. The avalanche...almost a truck and almost an suv. Seems like a lot of wasted space in the back.
The only thing I plan on towing is my first gen yota to ky and a few other places with an open bed trailer.I thought that until I drove my mom's 02 Avvy for a week. What do you plan to tow with it? The 4l60e does not like alot of weight...You can get them in 2500 versions with the 6.0 or 8.1 and the 4l80e trans though.
I pulled my truck to the alignment shop after putting my lift on, it pulled it o.k. but stopping sucked, and I wouldn't trust it far, but that was a really heavy load. There are 4 37x14 tires in the back for reference, 3 side by side, and one in front of that.
I would love to have one as a DD, but I want the 04+ without the plastic cladding.
If you do get the half ton, look into doing the vette servo upgrade, and regear the rearend to something more like 4.10 to give it a little help towing, many of them come with 3.42s although that does help my mom's 02 to get 22 highway.
Make sure the trailer has good brakes, and I would look into regearing (if it has the common 3.42s, if it already has the 3.73 or 4.10 I would leave it be) and adding a big tranny cooler to help crossing through the mountains. You can add a trans temp gauge really easily, just get a gauge cluster from a 01-02 2500HD with the 6.0. It plugs right in, and the trans temp gauge will work without any other mods. You will have to have the cluster programmed at the dealer for the correct mileage though. The only thing I plan on towing is my first gen yota to ky and a few other places with an open bed trailer.
