Wife and I are in a very heated argument.
She is wrong.
I, of course, am right.
But lets see who else agrees w/ me.

umm...2010 is the beginning of a new decade

yep.....I fear it will be shittier than the last one

sh!t, I didnt see the beer vote until later. maybey its because I cant see straight:shaking:

Yes in the same way were said to be in the 21st century, that implies our numbering is skewed...

But, who care 2012 is when the real fun begins !!

make up sex on New Years....Way to go Dave!

She says I only get make-up sex when I admit I'm wrong.
in other words, it won't happen  :poop:

I'm calling it a new decade just because it is a significant change numerically. It's just easier that way. In reality, who gives a shit? Does it really make a difference one way or the other? It's the year itself that makes the historical significance. I was actually thinking about this on the way home last night.

In summation, Dave, tell her she's right, even though she's wrong. I'm assuming she's a "new decader" whereas you're a stodgy, historical holdout. I don't say this often, but get over it. It doesn't matter as much as make-up sex.

So what did you say? New decade or not?

Actually I'm onthe "new decade" side, she's determined that since yo ustart counting with "1" then you can't have a new 10 until 11 begins.

Which is ludicrous because it assumes that years and like single blocks of time w/o partial units.
Technically, our dating system is based on time PASSED since a major event (death of Christ - even though it's well established the date is very wrong). Only 3 months afterwards would not be "year 1" but just "It's onlybeen 3 month - 1/4 year - since AD" etc. thus Year 100 = 100 years passed, etc. So the first 10 years ended Dec 31st '09.

now Mark you are right, beer and sex are definitely more important and certainly more enjoyable!
But there's an even better answer anyway - technically every Jan 1st could be a a new decade b/c you always have the most immediate 10 years behind you, that by definition is a decade - just like I just turned 33, it's been a decade since I turned 23. People just happen to like "round" numbers. The only thing that changs really is the term you use to refer to this time period (20s, 30s... WTF is it now anyway?)

New Years was a year for me. Stopped drinking last year to dry out a little and don't even crave them anymore. My wife was having a beer with our neighbor and I took a sip and it was nasty to me. Not saying I'm never going to drink again but wasn't that bad to stop. Good luck. You will feel a lot better and remember a whole lot more.

I would agree, its a new decade. Just like your born, your not one yet but your life still started before you were 1, so the decade is like the life, it just started on 2010.
But on the other hand, who gives a shit. I want a beer!

First Dave, A.D. is anno domino (in the year of our Lord) 1 AD was ACTUALLY Jesus' first birthday. Not 1 year after he died.

Sure this morning started a new decade, but it dis not start the 201st decade.
Dec 31, 2010 will be 2010 years after Jesus' birth (assumind they had the date right, but seeing as how there are 9 accepted dates in various cultures around the world at BEST we have an 11% chance of it being right)

Right after your first year of life you turn 1, after your second year you turn 2, etc....but according to you nimrods after your ninth year of life you have lived 10 years.

Nimrods? Nimrods? Thems are fightin' words!:popcorn:

Nope, that's a misinterperetation of what I'm saying.
After you have FINISHED your 9th year of life, which is your 10th birthday, you are STARTING your 10th year of life.
Which means you are in the beginning of a new decade of life as of one

Take a look at a clock. Where is the 1? it's not at the start, but 1/12th of the way in already.

Exactly, a decade is 10years. If you are only starting your tenth year you clearly havent lived a decade.

Dave you are too dern smart to argue this side of this.

A decade consists of roughly 3,652.5 days.
On your tenth birthday you have only been alive 3287.25 days days.

What? You math is missing something. I hope you don't do the books for that business of yours
1st b-day = 365 days alive.
See chart below.
1 365
2 730
3 1095
4 1460
5 1825
6 2190
7 2555
8 2920
9 3285
10 3650

As of your 10th birthday, you have been alive 3650 days (screw leap year) = 1 decade. 10th birthday = the beginning of year 10. Day 3651 = 1st day of Year 11 and the 2nd decade.
We celebrated our 2010th birthday on Friday.

The key is that we denote years when they are completed.
