I just called the 1-800 number posted on the website and the message asked that I call "Nita" at 828 265 6564, so I did, she said she was the owners daughter and she is making some changes. From our short conversation she made it pretty clear that she was the owners daughter and that she is "making it better" in any which way she saw fit. I did tell her that I liked it as is but oh well.

Fee for a truck / rig like mine is $15.00 ok very resonable but
in addition to the truck fee there is a $15 per person to ride the trail
Camping is additional

so this means that if we bring the kids its $75.00 just to ride in the Jeep, if we decide to bring the 4wheeler or dirt bike there is an additional $11.00 fee plus the camper fee.

Just venting

That really stinks. Our family has always enjoyed going there. Looks like it is going to be a very expensive trip for us now.

Is Mountain city the same as callante?

Yes:shaking:

If they are charging that much they may loose business. Rig cost + passengers + lodging + Fuel, to get there and wheel, + food + etc = too much cost for most folks to stomach. If this is the truth it will definitely change my annual Thanksgiving trip plans. I can't afford three days wheeling at those fees.

It is tough for a family of 4 or so, but.........

A round of golf will cost you $30+, Grey Rock is $50 a day, Golden Mountain is $25 a day, Coal Creek is $17 per person per day kids 12 and under $10. We've hashed this before, as the trend goes to private parks, nice ones with amenities are going to cost some $. Sucks for a family that takes the kids for sure though.

Crozet is $25/day and $40/weekend. No camping fee. Primitive camping only. That is the member price I think the open days are $30/day and $50/weekend, but not exactly sure on that one. The join fee is $25 if you plan on going more than once.

I think the passenger fee is bogus. Windrock has the same deal and since I wheel with my 2 boys all the time that would be $45/day + camping. Not gonna happen for me. Which sucks because I like that place.

Does this mean that Mr Brown is not doing well? I hope not.

At least the daughter is still willing to let us ride there, instead of selling out to developers for millions, and shutting us out like at Crackers Neck.

I just hope it's not the beginning of the end of Callalante.

I'd gladly pay $20 a day to wheel there but I think the passenger fee is a bit much and will certainly hurt their buisness. In a good year my wife and I would go there 6-8 times. Thats definetly not going to happen now.

When we were up there this past weekend a lady (I'm assuming "nita") was at the pay station... Well when we pulled in to park and unload she ran after us like we were going to stiff her and just hit the trails... In any event of course we were going to pay but the cost was still $11? She was handing out stickers w/ the date on it, etc.

The new fee system seems kind of steep considering if you dont know the trail system you'll spend the majority of your time there wandering around with no idea where you are.

I'll still pay $15 to ride there..

Maybe someone could point her to this thread or talk w/ her to find out more details...

Mr Brown is not well but I was there a few weeks back and he was there driving his grand cherokee around the parking area (I don't think he was supposed to be driving) I had talked to one of his grandsons and I new there were come changes coming and the amenities are supposed to get better as well. I don't agree with the passenger fee or the seperate driver and vehicle fees. This is going to get very expensive for families and will definately lose them some business. I am hoping that they will come up with an anual membership fee and reduce the day fee for members. Just my 2 cents.

The passenger fee is rediculos,, wonder if she realizes she will lose money by doing this,, i would sure thank so

Those prices are too high.

It needs to stay open..Id pay to facilitate that...if Ronnie wasnt involved maybe more so.

Welcome to the new world of pirvate parks for wheeling!!!!

She should think about this......As the cost of taking a family increases....the amount of families going decreases.

doesnt take much to figure out what kinda person starts showing up when the family type wheelers leave.

of course we would like to enjoy our sport for cheap but the bottom line is it cost a lot to keep these places open. it's one thing when someone opens a good wheeling spot that likes to wheel their self but when it turns into a for profit bussiness, well thats another story. when you compare what we are paying to get into these places to almost any other form of entertainment it seems pretty cheap. i am willing to pay more to help support the few folks that keep us a place to play, but on the other hand a man that brings his whole family should not have to spend 60 or 70 bucks to get in.

I called and talked with Nita for awhile this evening. I think some of this has been coming for some time and some of it has been accelerated by the ATV accident that happened the weekend of the Toy Run. I also think some of it may be a result of some information I presented to the Brown family last year regarding a management plan for the park which would provide for some degree of revenue protection/collection and improvements to the park.

The family is aware of the potential of an OHV park that is well managed and is aware that under Ronnie's tenure the park was ill managed to say the least.

Due to legal reasons, they need to have everyone sign the waiver. In order for the waiver to carry weight, each signee (parent of children) must pay a fee.

There is not a fee for a vehicle, the fee is for each person. So for me and my rig it is $15. For me and my rig and two sons it is $45. Camping is still $11.

I talked at length with Nita about the fee structure. I expressed my opinion that the proposed fee structure would hurt families and she said she would consider that. That she might be open to something like a reduced rate for 12 and under say.

On the up side, she did ally my long time fear that when Mr. Brown passed away the children had NO inclination or incentive to maintain Callalantee as an OHV park. They intend to continue to operate the property as a logging operation as well as an OHV park and intend to make improvements to the bath houses, camping facilities and trails.

IMO, when you consider the expense involved in owning, maintaining and managing an OHV park, $15 a day is not a bad price to pay for 24 hours of entertainment! It may cost some people more to go to Callalantee. You don't have to go, that's your call, but I will reserve judgment on the fee increase until I see how the park is going to improve under new management!

10 or 15 per rig, including the driver, then 5 for each additional seems reasonable. Can't let URE spoil us. IIRC URE has 16 miles of trails and Mt. City has 130? Correct me if I'm wrong, been a while since I have looked over the site.

I'll pay it, if anything just to help to keep it open. To all you that has an issue....
