I remember this being asked not to long ago but I searched and couldn't find it,

Whats the proper break in procedure for new gears?

Reason I ask Is I just realized I've been riding on a pinion with two chunked out teeth for over 3 months now when I popped my diff cap to investigate this bad noise I had been getting since b4 christmas in the Z71's rear.

Figure I aught to get it fixed, lol. And I remember waaaay back in the day when I had it origionally regeared it throu (mumble mumble 4wheelparts mumble) they said i had to ride bout 500 miles w/o towing or anything to break em in.

Problem is I literally tow all the time and usually its several times w/in the week so I will have a serious problem if I can't tow for 500 miles unless I just drop a ridiculous amount of $$ on gas and drive around NC for a day till i go 500 miles.

Any tips/ideas?

Thanks

THe richmond gear install sheet says:
Street vehicles should be driven at normal street driving
speed for approximately 10 miles, then stop and let cool for
30 minutes. Do this 2 to 3 times. Towing vehicles need
approximately 200 to 300 miles of normal street driving
before being used for towing

300 miles isn't really that much; make a run to the beach or somethin :driver:

hmmm maybe If after getting regeared i drive it from charlotte to morganton then all the way to raleigh that aught to get me bout 300 miles, suck down a crapload of gas and time but I mean gotta do what I gotta do I guess

that's the exact opposite of what you're supposed to do...

holding a constant speed is NOT the way to break in gears...

you want to cycle them by heating them and then letting them cool...a lot of stop and go through all RPM ranges...

you don't want to hold it at a steady (especially highway) speed for an hour or more...

get a couple hundred miles of in-town driving, change the fluid, then do what you wish...

x2, drive short distances and lettem cool, I always tell people that and they never listen. Out of the dozen sets I've done, only two people listened but none have failed. I believe the break in will make gears smoother and maybe last longer but shouldn't break teeth. Sounds fishy to me...

crap well there's the first problem, I have to drive the truck down to charlotte to get it fixed then I have to get the truck backup to Raleigh somehow and that would be an immediate 150 miles of constant speed driving

Damn I might just ride on the gears now till they really blow up cause this is gonna suck one way or another. my warranty lasts till july but I'll be back in Mooresville in May for summer break and it would be alot easier to deal with once Im home cause I wont have to drive it all the way up to raleigh at least then

I mean it has held up since before christmas like this think it'll hold up till mid may?

just take backroads and stop often on the way from Charlotte to Raleigh.....
There ya go! See the sights! It'll be fun, like a road trip used to be.

Letting them cool is very important, BTW.

can you stop at a car wash and spray down the diff to get it to cool?? idk if thats acceptable, but it sure would cut down on time

The idea is to cool it slowly..

semi-float 14. Same lug pattern.

Problem is can't ever find those, no big deal thou I can just run the 8 lug adapters in the front, actually works out better anyway cause I've been needing some 16.5 6 lug wheels but i had 8 lug ones and now I can use them :driver:

Plus I'll have a super stout full floating rear end :burnout:

Oh yea i'll have bigger brakes too to help stopping when towing ;)
