Hi there, love this forum wish I would have found it a while ago. Well I'll start here I bought a 95' 1500 Ram 4x4, I know let the bashing begin. My first intent with it was to just pull my bass boat but now I'm getting something else to tow the boat and I'm new to off roading but loving ever minute of it. The 1500 when I bought it, it had a 4" body lift and has 33x12.5x15" tires. The engine in it is a 5.2 liter thats not what I wanted for pulling a boat so I want to turn it into a complete off road truck.

Now is a 1500 5.2 litre ok for a off roading truck...

If it will work what are some good areas to start on it, I've been reading and noticed lockers would be good and maybe a better suspension.

Well any help would be appreciated and nice meeting you all here.

The motor is ok a v8 is always a good thing for offroading the only drawback to your truck is it size. Depends On what kinda wheelin you wanna do too, with the body lift (by the way I would not suggest a body lift over 3" max) you could put 35's on your truck. With 35's on a full size truck you can do all of uwharrie. If I were you depending on what my budget is, I'd get some 35's or put a 2" suspension lift and trim the fenders a little and run 37's and lock up your axles first thing. In my opinion there is no better upgrade than lockers, even if you have huge tires lockers will get you more places. Look for either detroit ez lockers or lockright lockers since they are light on the wallet and lock up the axle all the way.

Is this what I will want to get for my truck and if so will I put this in the front and rear end...so i would need to buy 2 of these.

If you get Detroit EZ lockers (which I what I'm runnin in the rear of my Z71 and my front 44 thats going under my blazer) here's what you need for the front axle:

For the rear axle you'll need this (this one's a lockright):

Your truck should be equiped with a Dana 44 front axle and a chrysler 9.25 rear axle, and you will need to get one for each and the above two i showed you would work perfectly if you wanted to go with those.

i recently sold my 2000 dodge 1500. (piece of crap tranny  )

It is a great platform, but is still a bit large for some trails.

If you have a reg cab shortbed, that would be best as a trail truck, but mine was a excab, and did just fine in URE.

I'd suggest a longarm lift for the front, and new springs rear, and remove all of the body lift, it isn't needed at all for 35's with this truck.

For all the info you'd need and lots of technical help, check out pavementsucks.com, there is lots of 94-01 ram info there

Welcome aboard!

If your planning to buy lockers for your application, I suggest supporting our local vendors (MANY listed under "Vendors" section)... I think you'll find the pricing competitive and gives you a live body to speak with (as opposed to some counter flunky from the mass merchandisers :shaking: ) that knows you & your rig.

plus you are supporting an independant person as opposed to a big company. I'd rather pay someone on this board for something and help them support their habit than someone at a big company.
