Just picked up this rig a couple of weeks ago (yup, its a 2WD, lol...) all the work was done to it when I bought it.

Stopped by the forums because I ran into some people at Uwharrie last weekend and they pointed me here

good stuff!

look forward to learning lots :)

All that on a 2wd? It can't POSSIBLY take too much to convert it... can it?

I thought about it and looked around a bit....it would take a good bit of time and money to do it right, or a donor vehicle at least.

Ill likely just throw a locker in it and a winch on it....for the wheeling that I do every once in a while I dont really need 4x4 tho....If I decide to go the 4x4 route at some point ill just buy a similar stock rig and change over all the goodies.

I got too good of a deal to pass this one up, so I jumped on it :)

wow you either have some balls or your crazy, 4wheeling without 4wd. You may want to invest in a winch.

I my younger days I took my chevy 2wd dd to a friend's farmlandand wheeled it and had major fun. Luckily I only went once or twice and didn't break anything. Transitioning from 2wd to 4wd when I bought my cherokee I could see it make a huge difference. If I were you... That is a very nice cherokee and it wouldn't really be that hard to save up, spend the time, and convert it to 4wd and wheel better. If you wheel for long periods with that cherokee you are gonna beat it up and turn it into junk. It is so much harder to do anything, esp. with no 4low and having one tire spinning. You will have the unibody smashed and the motor blown.

I am not trying to bash you or anything, just making a suggestion. :D Whatever you do, have fun!

not difficult at all. The 2wd versions have a monobeam axle, so its retrofitted with everything the 4wd version has...just no diff and driveshaft. Just find a donor axle, a t/case and driveshaft.

I've got a great donor vehicle for ya! An '88 4x4 that needs a home. The motor's shot, but the rest of the drivetrain is great.

how much ya' askin?

I'm with Wolfpack, if your going to wheel it at all you will find out sooner or later most places that thing can go will only be because of a heavy foot. At some point you will want to keep up with the big boys. If that happens and you get on it enough there will be all kinds of damage. It's very easy to convert because it's all there and ready just get a few parts and there you go. P.S. the parts you are looking for are on this board. Dana 30 axles are every where and a 300 transfer case can be found easily. It shouls also help the resale value as well.

I'm not tryin to bash you as well but if you are four wheeling think about it.

thats my buddys old XJ, you got that thing at carmax, right?

welcome aboard

Yup, I bought it off of our wholesale lot, it just looked like too much fun to pass up and it gets better mileage than my last truck (2002 Dodge Ram Quad Cab)

Can you give me some details on it? Seems like its in pretty good shape and runs pretty well, also looks like it had a rack/sterio/lights on it at one point...any old pics?

Id like to see if I could touch base with him and see if he has any of the old stock stuff (suspension, bumper, wheels, tires, rear sway) that he wants to get rid of

hmm, wonder if the front axle, xfer case, drive shaft and tranny would work with my current stuff

Kilby has an aw4 trans and you most likely have a 42re. Im not sure about the output or the spline count of the 42re, but I would think the np242 or a 231 would mate to it. The front axle and driveshaft will definitly work.

wow, was that in english? :p

there are some differences in the AW-4s in both those Jeeps(yes, they should both be AW-4s) I would stick to 91+ parts if possible. They will be a little easier to mate up. You will need the tranny, tcase, front axle and driveshaft. We have done it a few times and it is not a big deal at all. The worst part is just the wiring on the different models of the AW-4.
