*Newbie Help* I've got 147,000 on a 350 v8 Chevy Z-71. It leaks oil towards the rear of the engine. After 4k miles I need a good quart of oil sometimes another 1/2 quart. Any ideas of a $$$ to fix the problem? Should I look for a re-built engine or would it be cheaper to have it rebuilt, or .....???? I have no clue what to do but I don't need a broken down truck! It's used on Fridays and Saturdays for work! Any help will be great!!

Sounds like you need to replace the rear main seal.

could be intake leaking oil, could be rear main seal. among other things, i would probably just fix the oil leak as to replacing motor. If replacing- factory Gm crate motor new with warranty can be had for about $1400 thats the only way i would go on a stock 350.

seal is like 5-10 bucks....pulling the tranny is a bitch

Just checked my oil and had to put 2 more quarts in and could probably use another. Any one have a ballpark amount a shop would charge for the work?

Check your oil more often. Don't let it get that low. No need to replace an engine unless you have to.

Thanks for all the replies. I spoke to a shop today and was told $350 for the job. I'll have them check the valve covers first - just in case that's the problem.
