Short story - yesterday, as I was going to the gas station to put air in the spare because the other tire was even flatter - like a dummy and forgetting the rules - I forgot to tighten the lugnuts after dropping the jeep and so my tire ended up going down the road in front of me. That aside, one thing that happened that I don't understand is that my key wouldn't turn off and it wouldn't start either. We tried to mess with a couple of things and I hit the brakes - it went to the floor - Great! no brakes! Went to show Dad and I had brakes again and I could start the Jeep. Now it appears to work fine. Can anyone explain the key not turning off and the engine not turning over initially after the wheel flew off????
 
Well, I was hoping somebody would have a clue so that if it happens to me again in the future, I would know quicker what to do. :(
 
issue

sounds like to me whne the wheel flew off it bound the steering up so with out locking the steeringit wont cut all the way off nor will it crank back until it locks a recyles
 
So me hitting the brakes "told" it that everything was okay and everything went back to normal? The steering wheel was free moving that entire time and didn't lock up like I'm used to.
 
Does an 02 have ABS ? ....maybe the fact that there was no wheel on the jeep sent the computer into a unknown state.

Was the key physically not turning ?, or was it turning, but not doing anything?

Not too many things scarier than a 33 rolling down the street at 40mph ..... a 44 comes to mind :lol:
 
I don't think it has ABS as I think those lines were left off when we replaced the front axle system with a 96 Grand Cherokee.

It turned all the way to what should have started and turned back to just before it would be in the "off" position (to then be able to pull the key out). So not the full range of motion and couldn't pull out the key.

LOL, by the time the wheel was in front of me I was doing a whimpering NO! in my head. I had been hit in the head with the handle of the Hi-Lift, the original tire was flat to the rim, the spare was flat too just not as flat, one lugnut on the spare was stripped, hands were hurting, tired, . . . Hence the whimpering NO! And then calling myself a dumbass for not tightening the lugnuts :(
 
I feel your pain,

I worked on mine late one night, Got it all back to together and tighten the lugs with my impact gun, Well the air was not turned on so the gun failed to tighten them completely. Should have hit them with a lug wrench (i know, I was tired), Next morning head off to work and I got to the main intersection at Hwy181 and my driver front 35'' tire shot across the hwy and no one hit it (very lucky), I limped it to the curb. That was not a feeling I ever wanted again, So it am anal about my lugs now, But you live and learn. Glad you got as lucky as I did.
