Spent the weekend camping and fishing along the New River. I caught one really nice smallmouth and a bunch of smaller fish.

Where did you camp and what section did you fish?

I camped and floated a section on the New when I was ~10 yrs old, (about 20 years ago), but I can't remember where we were. As I recall it was near the NC/VA border, but that's all I remember.

I was looking online for some info on NC New river access, but came up short. I'm looking for a 10-15 mile section with good smallmouth and spots to canoe camp, for a potential overnighter. Within NC would be nice.

I think you can gain access in Sparta.

New River camp ground is pretty good. Go up 77 north to hwy 21 exit take it straight to Sparta on up to new river easy::Rockon:

Stayed at RiverCamp U.S.A. campground. Its just a little ways upstream from where the North Fork of the New and the South Fork of the New run together. Fished from there to The Mouth of Wilson just beyond the N.C./Va line. There are several places to camp and fish in this area.

Also N.C. & Va. have a reciprocal agreement on fishing a portion of the New. You need a valid fishing license from either state and you can fish. The agreement covers that portion of the New River between the confluence of the North and South forks of the New River in North Carolina (Alleghany Co.) and the confluence of the New and Little rivers in Virginia (Grayson Co.).

Thanks for the info.

I'm pretty sure the last time I went it was further downstream around the New River Campground (off hwy 21).

I also found this ...

How are the sections on the South Fork? Say between Wagoner and Kings Creek? How tough is it to navigate these sections in a loaded canoe, in the late summer/early fall? Decent fishing up that way?
