Coming back from Greensboro today heading eastbound, we drove into a pretty heavy and rather sudden downpour. On the westbound side, 2 or 3 cars had collided and were blocking the middle 2 lanes, so traffic was backing up quickly.. (it had just happened).

a few hundred feet back, 2 cars in the left lane had hit and were up against the barrier wall..

As we're watching this unfold, maybe 500 more feet back, I see a big rig swerve harder than i've ever seen something that size change lanes... the traffic in front of him had all stopped HARD, and he chose the vacant middle lanes.. he swerved left, then corrected to get back in his lane.. The trailer kept on... it fishtailed into the left-most lane (4-lanes wide here), and he pulled it all back in.

Both Nicole and I thought that trailer was going for the retaining wall at first... the tractor was in between the #2 and #3 lanes, and the back of the trailer was WELL into the #1..

GREAT driving, whoever you were... he obviously had the quick thinking to drop the hammer and accelerate when the trailer started to go... It was a damn impressive sight, and it pulled back in line like a perfect powerslide

 for ya, driver... He probably at Wal-mart now buying new underwear..

Maybe Walmart is sold out from the dozens of people who saw him and needed underwear too! I would have loved to have seen it myself (from a distance!). Sounds like it was impressive for sure.

Yeah him and all the folks around him!

We were Eastbound around 4(?) just past Greensboro, the westbound lane had like 3 wrecks within about a 1/2 mile distance. WTF was that all about? Like maybe #1 happened, then #2 and 3 were residual from it. Looked pretty recent b/c traffic was just slowing down, but em. crews were there already.
Rich, was that what you were passing? It wasn't raining then but it was on it's way.

that trick doesn't work so much with big trucks and that kind of load. he probably had the sense to stay out of the service/engine brakes and was easing on the trailer brakes.

People can't drive when it starts raining..

If you are on 52 in Winston Salem and it begins to rain, odds are you are going to see an accident.

The title of this thread kind of reminds me of the "Real Men of Genius" comercials. "So here's to you, Mr. I-40W trucker. Crack open an ice cold Bud Light at the truck stop and change your shorts!"

Man this reminds me of an old friend of mine. He was hauling A full, 40' sand trailer on I-95 in Delaware. Hit some black ice, Looked out his passenger window, & there was the trailer. It had collected 4 cars. He dropped the hammer, & the trailer straightened out. Three of the 4 cars came out from under there. He, & the last car left the highway. After cutting down a bunch of trees he came to A stop. He gets out, expecting the worst. Womans car was under the trailer axles, just up the the back of her front seat. He looks in, & she's just staring back with the widest eyes he'd ever seen. Turns out she was completely unharmed. Him too. Amazing.
