I got some Nissan Pathfinder questions...
I am looking at trading my truck for one, and I want to know what quirks they have. I've heard that the Auto Transmission goes on them if you don't have a cooler on them...but I'm not sure what year range that affects.

I've also heard of major rust issues with the 1987 model (one that I may trade for), but I haven't found any transmission issues...

Someone steer me in the right direction

I like the 4Runners too...but it looks like I'm having a snowball's chance in Hell of selling so I have the money to buy the guy on here who is being so nice and patient with me...(you know who you are)

If you're just looking for a basic aftermarket tranny cooler try carquest or napa. it'll have a couple of zip tie like things to attach it to the radiator (Goes through the fins on the radiator and cooler) and some hose to attach to your existing cooler lines. If I was going to do any amount of rock crawling or towing I'd get one.

tranny coolers

I've seen them for less than $100, maybe closer to $60-$75. They range depending on the size of the unit though.

Hey Andrew, I can tell you i had a 95 Pathfinder SE auto and it never gave me one problem. I had to get the timing belt changed around 100k miles and a tranny rebuild at 110k. So besides the high mileage maint. it never broke down on me, smoked, nothing. The only problem i had was to lift it it would cost $2k for only an Old Man Emu 2" b/c the 95's had electronic suspension (sport susp.). With that older model you are talking about it wont have that package and they are much easier to work on. As for the tranny, hey man, your talking about an 87 with probably like 200k + miles on it, so swap out the tranny if thats the case. The good thing is, the Japanese have tons of rebuilt trannys in warehouses so you can probably get one for 2 bowls of rice. Overall, with rust and tranny issues, it all depends on the condition of the vehicle and how many miles are on it. Check the suspension as well, mine started to droop in the rear, so if you are towing.. i wouldnt want to be behind you. Good luck bud, hope the trade goes well, Pathfinders are good strong vehicles.

This Pathfinder has a new tranny with 500 miles on it.

Thank you so much for the info.
If you look in the Parts wanted area, I need those 2 things to get the A/C going again...

The guy says zero rust...
We'll see...

Those parts could probably be had new for not too much $$$.
If you need any help with the tranny cooler, or any other issues that come up with it. I live close by and have a tool or two if needed.

Thank you so much...just keep your fingers crossed that the trade goes through for me.

I am totally stoked about this. I've always liked the Pathfinder...
My truck just isn't practical for me anymore.
I really wanted an XJ, a 4runner 90+, or a pathfinder...

Now that the opportunity has arisen, I might as well go for it. I wanted newer than an 87, but from what I've read...it doesn't really matter that much...

I'm going to bail on this 240,000 miles on it...
Too high for my blood...
Guess I'll keep searching

It looks nice though...
look on charlotte craigslist and search 1987 Pathfinder. Looks great...$2500

Someone may want this...but I can't get something with that many miles...

its dead

I've had 2 Pathfinders. A 91 V6 5speed, I bought with 160K on the clock. Put 6inches of lift on it, beat the snot out of it and it ran fine when I traded it in at over 200K. I've got a 95 V6 5spd with 113K and havent had any problems beside an auto hub that shit out. One thing to watch out for is rust in the frame mainly over the rear axle to the bumper. Almost all the V6 exhaust manifold studs break with mileage and cause a clicking sound its a fairly inexpensive fix. They changed the interior in 92 and the newer style looks alot better IMO. But the drivetrain stayed basically the same. I know where a couple are for parts if you need something PM me. I dont mind pulling them off and shipping them if it'll save you some coin.

Andrew, offer him $800-$1000 bucks. He is asking too much for a truck with that many miles on it. You are just asking for problems and im sure its not prestine condition.

I just looked at the craiglist add, its a 2 door as well. If you want a Pathfinder, there is a nice green one for sale on this site. Its a 5 spd as well which is rare (i looked everywhere for one) and if i wouldnt have recently bought this TJ i would have scooped this one up. Its a 95 SE i beleive, the only thing i noticed is it doesnt have the nurf bars. i think he wants $2500 as well. Check it out, and good luck bud.

I really like the green one on here...he and I were going to trade, but he's hesitant because he has the little Nissan truck...
IF he would trade great, If I can buy it from him...kudos...
I need it to pull a 17' boat or a trailer...does the 5speed need a tranny cooler?

I had a friend that owned one - he wheeled up some trials on the side of blue ridge parkway, It was stock and bashed it all over rocks. I was supprised what kind of beating
it would take. I've been in it when it had muck up to the side windows and taching so high I thought it was toast but it kept on moving. Before he finaly killed it I think he had somewhere around 240+. He had the 2 door style I wanted to buy it from him but he wouldn't sell it.
