I just bought a 1990 toyota v6 4x4 to hunt out of. I was checking to see if the 4 wheel drive worked and it does not.It will go into high range and low range the front drive shaft will turn but the front end will not pull and the light on the dash does not come on either. any help would be great thank you.

the truck has alum wheels and large solid center caps so i was thinking it had auto hubs but I might need to go pull a wheel off and see if it has manual hubs.

it will be tomorrow before I can pull one of the front wheels to see if it has manual hubs.did any of these year models have auto hubs?

truck does not have manual hubs, it will have drive flanges....... most all second gen runners and a lot of trucks had " A.D.D." "Automatic Differential Disconnect "

front axle is engaged by a vacuum actuated collar, the hoses to the vacuum diaphragm are probably dry rotted or cracked from age some where.

you can :

A> find the vacuum problem, could be a hose or vacuum switch problem,

B> use a vacuum pump to engage the front drive axle and leave it in 4x4 ( I would find a way to per lock it in ) and then remove the drive flanges and install manual hubs. ( I chose this route, worked well, and I gained 2mpg as well )

C> make bacon sammiches

The choice is yours, choose wisely

bypass the A.D.D.(run new hose from manifold to 4wd side of actuator) and put manual hubs on it. instant NORMAL toyota.
