Novice Jeep Owner - Lift Question

I am an owner of a stock 2011 Jeep Wrangler Sport JK . I bought a 3" suspension lift. My jeep has the factory 17 inch wheels. Of course with the lift I want to put 33's on the Jeep. Will 33 inch tires work with the stock rims and a 3 inch lift? Is there anything I need to know when I am shopping tires? Will any 33 inch tires fit on these rims? When looking online I see different sizes that say they are 33 inches tall i.e. 285/70/17 or 315/70/17 or 33/12.50/17... What is the difference, are all these sizes 33's, will they all fit these stock 17" rims, which looks the best,....?

Don't have a JK so dunno about lift and what it will clear, though me thinks a 3" lift should be sufficient to clear 33s. 33" tires usually fit a stock rim just fine. However, it's the width of the tire and rim that you need to be concerned with. 33x12.50 is the most common size you'll see. Most people go with a 8"-10" wide rim for these tires. I'm not sure if the JK stock rims are 7" or 8" wide rims, but a 12.50 tire should be just fine on a 7" rim as well. I wouldn't run anything wider than 12.50 on a 7" rim and nothing wider than 13.50/14" on a 8" rim.

As for the metric tires all saying they are 33", that's because they are rounding up or down. Though a 315/70/17 is what I would consider a 35" tire. Yes, they will all fit your stock rim.

Google search for "Metric Tire Conversion" and you should find a plethora of online calculators to help.

These are from: http://www.redrock4x4.com/tireconversioncalculator.html

285/70/17 = 32.7x11.2/17
305/70/17 = 33.8x12/17
315/70/17 = 34.4x12.4/17

Very Helpful. Thanks for taking the time to explain.

A JK doesn't need much to clear 33's. With the stock wheel you will need some wheel spacers or it will rub.

the 33's will fit fine. as far as the tire goes i would highly reccommend the a/t over the m/t. the m/ts are much more difficult to balance and will ride alot rougher.

If you are going to run stock wheels you will likely need wheel spacers or youre tire will rub the control arms or frame.

I am running 39's on a 3.5" Rockkrawler lift. You should be fine as long as your lift came with new control arms. The biggest issue with a 12.5" wide tire on stock wheels is that it will rub the stock rear control arm, A set of wheel spacers will fix this or a new wheel with a shorter backspace. I think stock is 5" back space. An 8" wide wheel with a 4.5" backspace will clear fine. I would also suggest going staight to a 35" tire. A 3" lift will clear them just about perfectly. I ran 35's on my 07 with a 2.5" budget boost and had no rubbing whatsoever. I was running a wheel with less backspacing though. I have been through several JK's and have lifted them all. If you have any questions, feel free to hit me up.
