So....:poop:

Running my np231, with just the front driveshaft connected, there is this terrible popping sound coming from the t-case. The chain is not slipping, but I was thinking it could possibly be a chipped sprocket.

Sound familiar to anyone?

I'm thinking...not

I have a SYE on the case, but it shouldn't matter, the clunking seems to be originating at the front output shaft...unless you meant the front

It only does this in four wheel drive, so it has to be the front

just my .02 cents....assuming all the ujoints and cv driveshaft is in good shaft.... guess you will just have to open the case up and see whats going on. Just sounds like it could be the front output shaft. Pull the front driveshaft and spin the front outshaft shaft and see if its bent(rotates off center). let me know

digging into this maybe tomorrow, but probably friday. Picked up a donor to swap in if the original has detonated (thanks Brandon)

I'm seriously becoming weary of the whole chain-drive ordeal and am considering going to a flipped, twin-sticked 300, but we'll see what happens with the 231 first.

a buddy of mine, his 231 did the same thing, i thought it was the tcase from just listening to it, ended up being the front spider gears were torn all up. So i'd check them too, considering its easier to take the front diff cover off, than it is to take out and inspect the tcase. Id just start with the easy stuff first. Ujoints, bad slip yoke on d-shaft, front spiders, rule everything out before taking teh case apart.

Not much can go wrong with the front output on the. Doubtful the sproket would go before the chain. Maybe teh bearing? I'd pull the front driveshaft and turn teh front output and see if you feel or hear anything. X2 on checking the diff before you pull the whole case. Most of the repairs I have had to make to the 231 over the years did require case disassembly though :(

Thanks for the input....

I don't have any spider gears, and the driveshafts are good.....so it's got to be the case

Hopefully I'll get a chance friday to check it out:shaking:

I pulled the front cover off, just to check, and inspected the front driveline (once again). Wasn't there so I moved on to the t-case.

Welp...it ended up being the planetaries. The teeth were a bit fubarred, so I'm in the process of swapping another set in.

Like I told the other guy, make sure the input gear length is the same. There is a long and short version

the input lengths were the same but....the spline count was different on the two planetaries.

After a bit of head scratching, we ended up re-installing the slightly belmished original gears and throwing the whole mess together. I'm going to keep an eye on everything, and now we're not totally convinced that the problem is in the planetaries (at least, only in the planetaries).

I don't want to throw money at this case, so I'm just going to run it till it blows out, or til' I can get a flipped 300 swapped in. We'll see what happens:driver:
