After doing research I'm conflicted on what oil to run. Factory recommends atf but Novak mentions straight 30 weight or 5w 30. Any information would be helpful.

Back when i had a TJ, i ran 5w30 synthetic
Now (10 year later) I would run 0w20 synthetic (or 5w20)
also my current t-case calls for MT4 oil, who knows.....
its all about mileage
ymmv

ATF (technically dex II) is what the factory engineers called for in it... They spent a lot of time r&d'ing the case, so I would rely on what they called for over any recommendation by anyone - aftermarket company, individual, or anyone else... Just saying.... Kinda like the diff cover cooling & extra capacity, as shown by Banks, the square back covers distort the flow of lube, and although it holds more fluid, it doesn't lube as efficiently. The engineers that designed it knew what they were doing and extensively tested the lube choices and chose the best for the application.

Y'all have a lot more faith in engineers than I do. And I am one.

engineering is not a career, it's a way of life.. engineers should be trusted if they are good at what they do.... And I somehow doubt that designs and specs didn't pass stress testing by fudging results.

Knows his shit.
Just sayin...

i didn't mean to get you all feathers ruffled.
The original poster 'asked'........ and i 'replied'
Absolutely, your right, the manufacturer said use ATF...
They have a hole team of Engineers that decide that.
But i don't....

So atf 4 it is. Since this case is going to sit unused for a little while do I go head and fill it up to check for leaks. Or just wait and hope I sealed everything properly when I install it and fill it up.

I definitely understand the idea of filling it before hand to check for leaks, but I wouldnt want to try to install it full of fluid. It will make a massive mess......
