I went to the dodge dealer today to grab 4 quarts of my favorite, overpriced gear lube....Castrol Syntorque, yup the oil that all NV4500 transmissions need, or they will implode!

Imagine my surprise when I called up with the part number to confirm they had some on the shelf, the response from the other end of the line said "Yup, I have....147 bottles on the shelf, $9.50 each"

Like a fool, I rushed over there to grab as many of these $25/quart bottles for $9.50 as I could. It turns out that original part number now cross references to ATF+4. The note reads "engineering states ATF+4 is now an acceptable fluid for the NV4500"

Long and short, Castrol no longer makes the stuff, and internet lore is not promising for ATF, so I am off to Napa to grab some MTG 75w90.

Kind of like GM's 8 speed flubber up. The only tranny that has Sudder, from torque converter clutches that don't hook up. so, Don't build a convert that Works. Let's find a fluid that will work. When you get the Shudder, like mine did at 25,000 miles, you head to a GM dealer, for a double flush & refill. When the did mine the trans specialist[?], admitted they were experimenting with different formulations. I mentioned all I had ever run was Mobile 1 syn. atf.
He told me Mobile, Was doing the fluid for GM, & what they were putting in mine was in a Mobile bottle! But, it's not something I can buy off the shelf. When the settle on a formula, it will be packaged in a GM bottle. So far, mine is working, but I plan on getting it flushed again, before the warranty it out!

Tremec makes it and sells it under their own brand now..had to get some for my tko600 recently

I've been using Amsoil in my NV4500 since 2008. I even over fill it by a quart through the shifter hole. Works quite well. Definitely don't use a GL5 gear oil and I'm not sure I'd have warm fuzzies about using ATF either.

I have been told the overfill procedure can actually run to high bearing operating temperatures, right or wrong, I opted to go with the factory fill level.

I mixed in the castrol syntorque and the (3) qts of amsoil. The transmission definitely shifts better....not the "buttery smooth" nonsense I hear from so many amsoil supporters, but it is an HD truck top loader....I would describe it as smooth and clunky.

Amsoil was $17/quart.....cheapest route would be atf+4.... could have done the whole thing for $20!
