gave her throttle in 5th gear to pass someone on the interstate, BANG, grind, grind, clang, clang, etc, etc, now it bangs and grinds in all gears above 5 mph no 5th gear anymore

Well, I had it coming in more ways than one, just sucks because I have only been driving the truck for bout a month and a half, and the fact that I have no $$, owe my parents alot of $$ just in gas (and have no real income in the foreseeable future in excess of the bills I have to pay) thus meaning my new "reliable" daily driver tow rig is now parked for who knows how long and I'm back to DD'ing my Z71 that runs very badly, will probably double my already high weekly $125 gas bill driving back and forth from work to pineville to Mooresville twice a day, and I seriously doubt the Z71 will last long either with that much driving it has so many issues already.

basically as usual I am :handed::handed::handed:

My own fault thou I had it coming and saw it coming, as usual since everything bad that happens to me is my own fault for one reason or another. Whoever invented the saying "I'm my own worst enemy" hit it on the nail . . . .

this isn't really a tech thread I'm just venting at my suckness level here since its about a diesel truck, feel free to make comments about how I'm an idiot and bring these bad things upon myself, maybe it'll make me learn a lesson

I'm gonna go cry in the corner now bout how my poor choices in life just keep pouring it on, you reap what you sow :(

Could ALWAYS be worse...!!!

Have you never checked out a diesel forum?

NV4500 fifth gear nut is like #3 on the list of things to fix when you get a Cummins. Right under 'Killer dowel pin' and right before ball joints.

There could still be hope...just takes a little work...

the tech in this thread is of course fix the known problem with the NV4500 that has been documented by many.

Don't know why all your gears are noisy but it could be just b/c the nut has fallen down and is dragging on the counter shaft. it may be an easy fix, remove t-case and tailshaft and access the damge there are a # of kits avialable to fix the 5th gear nut. most of them are bandaids and if the nut backed out its b/c the splines on the mainshaft and the gear have had it. the 5th gear is a press fit and after some fretting occurs it is now a slip fit relying on the nut to retian it. The only permanet fix is to put a torque king main shaft in it with a 5th gear kit but thats dollars. pull the t-case and tailshaft put 5th gear back on and nut and weld that biatch in place, don't get too crazy you may have to take it apart again. thats will cost you about $50 make sure you put syntorque in it if you have factory syncros otherwise youll need new synchros very soon also. I can help you out with this if you need help have Q's just give me a shout.

Hate to hear this, though it seems to be a common problem. I won't be needing my trans jack anytime soon (I hope) if you need to borrow one and will probably be in clt the next few weekends.

Dang, sucks to hear Ricky. JT can commiserate with you on NV4500 and NV5600 failures. After two NV4500's and three NV5600's, he went to a ZF.

What is involved with putting a ZF five speed behind a cummins? Is there any factory application bellhousing that fits? Has the ZF been holding up for stump? I need to get rid of the auto something fierce, seems liek i could maybe get a ZF cheaper than an NV4500.

Shouldn't really matter, mine would be 2wd, and as far as i know, 5th gear nut isn't a problem on those? Would only be worth it if ZF was cheaper.

Don't mess around, put a Ford ZF in it. Ask JT about dodge trannys he's got more $$$$ in those than he's got in his truck. Just like anything else, you start pouring power to it, something will break.

An $800 adapter, plus the trans. So far the ZF6 is holding up to JT's driving. The ZF6 is a reliable trans until you start putting 800+ through it, and then it still isn't very problematic. But shockloading it will break outputs. I don't know much about the ZF5 though.

I've done this repair before, probably just the lock nut on 5th gear, 200-300 bucks, call me if you have a question. Brad @ 336-817-7289

Did he use the Destroked adapter? Any others out there worth looking at? Destroked appears high quality.

Him and I both used Destroked adapters. Very high quality. FordCummins makes one, but you have to clearance the bellhousing because of the starter. A few people have ended up cracking the bellhousing later on.

Alright, thanks. That is probably totally out of the budget for now, but i plan to keep this in mind, maybe keep an eye out for a deal on a ZF. Good to hear firsthand info on the swap.

Damn, and I thought is was a good thing when I put one in the YJ. learn more and more every day.

One more question, this time for Ricky. Why are you working a job that has you driving from mooresville to pineville that doesn't even pay you enough to cover your fuel bill?

thanks for the info, I'm gonna get the tcase and whatnot pulled in the next couple days see if I can't just weld the nut back on, i'd rather fix it for real but I don't have the $$ - btw you said $50, 1983 bronco said 200-300, what am I looking for when i get it apart other than a nut and if 5th gear is chewed up? Will I be able to see the syncro to tell if its messed up?

Thanks

Were you towing at the time, or just cruising?

goin about 70 mph on the interstate I hammered down (on power level 10 - comp tune with the quad) to pass/blow smoke at an attractive female in the car beside me - talk about asking for it to happen :shaking::handed:

I appreciate it man, but Andy let me steal his today

One more question, this time for Ricky. Why are you working a job that has you driving from mooresville to pineville that doesn't even pay you enough to cover your fuel bill?

well it covers my gas but not all of my bills was what I was trying to say, i could explain it but its a long story, but hey at least I found a job that is in the 4wd industry and has decent potential for advancement in a while, but I gotta do my time as a warehouse packing/shipping/grinding/finishing grunt before I get to move onto sales.

But it does suck not making any money beyond what I have to pay for bills, being in college i got used to my loan paying for everything and all the $$ i made going to what I wanted (jeep/partying) the real world is quite unforgiving to new college grads (I know I'm just getting what I deserve - stupid kids and there ignorance of real life  ) but hey everyone has to start from the bottom and work there way up i guess, its just pretty gay how much real life sucks from a financial standpoint. I've found that the majority of people that have nice things either do nothing but work all the time/work suck jobs, use money thats been borrowed, or there family is rich. I already have a ton of debt from college loans so I'm not borrowing money to buy things, my family is not Rich, and I have yet to give up and get some crap, suit wearing, pencil pushing desk/traveling business job (that my dad and everyone that hears what I have a degree in won't leave me alone about getting) and let it take over my life yet so at this point I am out of luck for now. Just still adjusting to the suckness of life :handed:

I'll get over it eventually, I've just been in a slump for various reasons ever since July and havn't gotten out of it yet, so ignore my random whining till I get over it

Oh believe me, I understand the just out of college broke thing. I just graduated from State last december. I too too a job that pays about 20k less than some of my peers from school, but I'm happier with my job than they are;) So just dont think i was cracking on you too hard.

Nah no big deal, just venting in general, mainly just mad at my self induced bad luck with all things mechanical, lol.

Seems like everyone one I've done in the past few months got driven for some distance with the nut and gear off and trashed the mainshaft. I've been able to save 2 but the others needed shafts
