How many codes can a 1998 CAR throw and still pass? i know my buddy has a 96 mustang and he i think was allowed to throw 3 or 4 codes? Any body got any idea?

I thought no codes at time of inspection was the correct answer?

if your car is 96 or newer you can NOT have any codes... if your car is 95 or older you can have whatever you want blinking in your face...

I dont know thats what im trying to figure out? Because i have a 98 mustang gt with offroad x-pipe and racing cats installed and MBL sensors intalled on it...so visually im good but when i clear the 2 codes that say that the cats arnt cleaning the right or left exhuast good enough the check engine light stays off for a couple days then comes back. Can the station tell if you clear the codes before?

Yes, when you "reset or clear the codes" your vehicle has to go thru several drive cycles to establish " IM Readyness " if you have not established this, the DMV computer will kick it back, as it will if you have codes present. not a "Fail" , but also not inspectable.

every modle/make has it's own routine to establish readiness, some can be met in minutes, others hours, some take days ( kinda sounds like this is yours)

good luck

Anything 1996-1999 can have two OBDII monitoring systems read as "not ready" but cannot have any DTC's. Anything 2000 and newer can only have one system read as "not ready". The general rule of thumb to get all the readyness codes set is to DD the vehicle for a week (100+ miles, varied speed and driving conditions) after changing the battery, having to jump start it or clearing the codes. Some will take less and some will take more.

first question...is there something wrong with your car? is the computer calobrated to the conditions of the aftermartket exhaust?

are the o2 sensors installed properly? usually anything marketed as "offroad" does allow for the installment of o2 sensors.

its your car, but what im getting at is.....fix the conditions that are causing the errors and you wont have to worry about failing the inspection.

It does have at total of 4 oxygen sensors 2 before cat and two after. Theres nothing wrong with the car other than those codes. I have been told that racing/highflow cats dont last as long as regular cats do. What is a DTC?

DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code

when did you get a stang?

Never gone finish the CJ that way
